DEWEY BASEBALL

Talk about your Jekyll-and-Hyde doubleheaders!

On Monday, the Sperry Pirates repulsed the Dewey Bulldoggers, 6-4, in a district game at Sperry.

But on Tuesday, the Doggers scuttled the Pirates, 16-13, on the Dewey diamond.

Dewey is in the midst of one of its most successful seasons (15-7) during the last several years. The Doggers also have a winning record (4-2) in district games.

Next up, they eye home showdown Friday against rival Pawhuska.

Riley Allen coaches the Doggers.

Following are more details from the games against Sperry.

SPERRY 6, DEWEY 4 — Two Dewey errors created the margin of difference — Sperry scored only four earned runs.

Karson Johnson started on the bump for Dewey but gave away partway into the second inning to Levi Wilson.

Mason Snellgrove looked strong as the closer the final two innings. He allowed only one hit and no runs, although he gave up four walks.

Dewey seized an early 1-0 lead but Sperry spurted back to go ahead, 6-1, in the fourth inning. The Doggers made a respectable seventh-inning rally with three runs.

Parker Garrison, Easton Davis, Layne Gastel, Wilson and Eddie Rice each ripped two hits to account for 10 of Dewey’s 12-hit assault. Davis, Gastel and Garrison also ripped a double apiece. Jay Murguia helped fuel the offense with a sacrifice bunt and Chase Miller reached base as a hit batsman.

Driving in one run apiece for the Doggers were Garrison, Nathan Sloan, Davis and Gastel.

For the Pirates, L. McGuire singled, doubled and drove in a run. A. Miller and C. Asher also each lashed two hits. Miller pitched the complete-game 12-hitter with one earned run, no walks and two strikeouts.

DEWEY 16, SPERRY 13 — This was the game of big innings.

Dewey scored seven runs in the second to surge to an 8-1 advantage.

But Sperry rallied with 10 runs in the top of the fifth to cut Dewey’s lead to 13-11. Dewey scored three more times the final two innings to sew up the victory.

Five different Doggers delivered doubles — Gastel, Sloan, Davis, Wilson and Miller.

Davis brought a John Henry-sized sledgehammer, finishing 3-for-4 at the plate and driving in six runs.

Also belting three hits each were Garrison (three RBI), Murguia (two RBI), and Rice (three RBI). Davis and Miller each lifted a sacrifice fly.

Sloan added two hits and two RBI.

Brayden Ringer scored twice and was hit with a pitch. Garrison was plunked twice.

Cooper Wood and Lathe Griggs split pitching duties for Dewey. Wood started and gave up only four hits and four earned runs, but Sperry also scored six unearned runs during his stint. He was credited with the win.

Griggs pitched the final 2.1 innings.

J. Blaylock homered and drove in three runs for Sperry. McGuire and B. Kirkendoll drove in two RBI each.

BARNSDALL BASEBALL

The Panthers continue their loud roar of success as they gather momentum going into their mid-April stretch.

They squeezed past Oklahoma Union, 14-13, on Monday and followed up by pounding Pawhuska, 9-1, on Tuesday. Barnsdall is 17-6 on the season and 11-2 since March 20.

BARNSDALL 14, OKLAHOMA UNION 13 — Both teams wanted this one bad — which was a good thing for the game’s competitive character.

“Oklahoma Union is tough,” Barnsdall head coach Rusty Gott said. “They can swing the sticks. Coach Aaron Funkhouser does a good job with the team. Fortunately, our boys were up to the challenge.”

Maverick Lanphear, Bodie Clark, Gavin Wood and Andrew Cole all took turns pitching for Barnsdall.

“It was a funny game,” Gott said about all the changes in momentum. “Our bats were good enough.”

Brohk Townley delivered a homer and multiple RBI.

“He hit the ball hard every at-bat,” Gott said.

Lincoln Gott drove in a run — on a base hit to the right side — to tie the score.

With the score knotted, 10-10, Cole delivered a three-run homer to put Barnsdall up.

Barnsdall then tallied its 14th run after Braden Byers got on base, stole second and third and scored on Clark’s hit.

BARNSDALL 9, PAWHUSKA 1 — Lincoln Gott started on the bump and threw three quality innings, allowing just one unearned run.

Cole delivered at the plate and also finished up on the mound.

Lanphear contributed a multi-run homer.
