Following is a look at recent area high school sports action.
__________
DEWEY BASEBALL
After taking one on the chin against Tulsa NOAH, the Dewey Bulldoggers put the bite on the Pawhuska Huskies during varsity action late last week.
Dewey — which is coached by Riley Allen — improved to 16-9, just four victories away from recording back-to-back 20-win seasons.
Dewey fell 5-1 to visiting Lincoln Christian (12-13) on Monday. The two teams meet again at Lincoln Christian on Tuesday..
Dewey fans hope Dogger batters will continue to whale away on the ball — Dewey has scored double-digit runs in four of its last six games and 13 times this season.
Somehow, Tulsa NOAH found a way to cool Dewey’s red-hot sticks.
TULSA NOAH 5, DEWEY 4 — NOAH cruised to a 4-0 lead in the first two innings and barely held on at the end. Dewey scored three times in the top of the seventh to fall one run short.
Nathan Sloan plunked a double (and drove in a run) for Dewey’s lone extra-base hit. Layne Gastel added a single and two RBI. Easton Davis also produced a tally.
Jay Murguia dashed to two runs and Parker Garrison reached base twice as a hit batsman and scored one run.
For NOAH, T. Salyers lashed three hits and plated one run while A. Hudson went 2-for-4, also with a RBI.
E. Arant pitched most the way for Tulsa Noah — striking out 13 batters in six innings.
Gastel and Karson Johnson took turns pitching for Dewey. Johnson allowed only two hits and one run during his three-inning stint.
DEWEY 16, PAWHUSKA 5 — The Doggers converted seven hits and 17 free passes into a rousing home win.
Batting in the nine-hole, Chase Miller helped light the fuse — banging a double, reaching base as a hit batsman and driving in four runs.
Davis, Gastel and Levi Wilson plated two runs apiece. Recording one RBI each were Murguia, Garrison, Sloan and Brayden Ringer.
Wilson and Murguia contributed a sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly, respectively.
But it was in the hit-by-pitch category the Doggers resembled some of the great Dewey teams of the past when a plunked batsman was credited with a “Dewey single!”
Rice, Davis and Ringer each took two for the team and Miller took one to account for seven hit batsmen.
Dewey also stole four bases, one by courtesy runner Kade Lackey, who scored a run.
Pawhuska pounded seven singles, topped by Kaiden Hofer with two. Jensen Snodgrass drove in a run.
Mason Snellgrove started on the bump for Dewey and scattered three hits in three innings while striking out five. Neither of the two runs scored during his stretch were earned. Ringer closed for Dewey with a shutout inning in the sixth.
