BARTLESVILLE AREA SPORTS REPORT
Following are summaries of some of the area prep basketball games earlier this week.
_____
BOYS: Nowata 65, South Coffeyville 21
The tough stretch for the Nowata Ironmen ended with an exclamation point!
Led by Talon Thompson — who scored 11 of Nowata’s first 14 points — and Clint Harrington, the Ironmen (8-6) snapped a three-game losing streak, while hundreds of happy fans looked on in the Nowata fieldhouse.
“We got back to showing what we’re capable of doing,” said Nowata head coach Derrick Ott. “Everybody but two guys scored. … Defensively, our intensity was a lot better and we had better ball movement, player movement and spacing.”
Nowata held South Coffeyville to single-digit scoring in the first half.
South Coffeyville made a mini-run to open the third period, but Harrington hit a couple of quick buckets for Nowata. Brett Malone and Caleb Woolman were a couple of the other Ironmen that hit multiple buckets in the second half.

BOYS: Shidler 77, Copan 73
It wasn’t a happy night but certainly a courageous one for the Copan Hornets.
Shidler buried eight three-pointers in the first half to shove Copan into a 20-point deficit. But Copan chewed the deficit down to eight points by halftime.
“In the third quarter it was back-and-forth,” Copan head coach Kolton Stacy said. “We cut it to two in the fourth quarter.”
But due to energetic effort expended in the comeback — plus major foul trouble — Copan ran out of time and gas in the final two minutes.
Two of Copan’s biggest guns — Teegan Caron (20 points) and Shooter Brewington (14 points — both fouled out.
Payten Call added 18 points. Xavier Allston and Zane Stricklin also each scored in double figures.
Shidler finished with 13 treys.
Copan fell to 6-5.
“I told the guys we’re nine points away from being 8-3,” Stacy said. “We’ve still got everything in front of us.”

GIRLS: COPAN 51, SHIDLER 49 (OT)
The Copan Lady Hornets fought for their second overtime win this season at home Monday, defeating Shidler, 51-49, in front of a packed Hornet gymnasium. On Jan. 6, they downed South Coffeyville 40-39 in overtime.
Shidler went into halftime with a six-point lead, 27-21. Copan came back in the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Lions 16-11 to get within one point. From there, it was back-and-forth scoring and solid Copan defense.
Copan’s Aimee Nittlet hit a jump shot with Jacklynn Thompson’s assist to tie the game with 38.9 seconds left.
“We were able to gain back the ball on a defensive stop, but couldn’t get a couple of shots to fall,” said coach Kirsten Ergenbright.
With 12 seconds left, Shidler had the ball when Copan’s Kaylee Woodworth got a deflection to Jacklynn Thompson, who was fouled on a layup with 5.9 seconds left. Thompson hit both free throws.
“We had another great defensive effort, and Shidler turned the ball over on the inbound,” said coach Ergenbright. From there, the Lady Hornets were able to maintain the ball until the final buzzer.
“They played great, they fought hard and didn’t give up,” said coach Ergenbright.”
Copan Lady Hornets top scorers included Thompson (16 pts), Zoey Secondine (8 pts), Harley Shull (7 pts), and Libby Tarter (6 pts)
Copan hosts Prue for homecoming on Friday. The boys will play first, followed by the girls.

GIRLS: Pawhuska
Even though the Lady Huskies didn’t play earlier in the week, they’re still riding the momentum from winning last week’s Morrison tourney.
In the semifinal they bashed Frontier, 62-36, and in the final they outlasted Pawnee, 42-35.
In the game against Pawnee, Brooklyn Miles rang up 33 of Pawhuska’s 42 points.
“Emillie Curry did a really good job on defense,” added Pawhuska head coach David Lampton.
Pawhuska improved to 11-1 and is ranked No. 12 in the state (Class 2A).
Miles and Curry are battled-tested talents back from last year and Madison Reynolds brings senior savvy and leadership to the mix.
Rounding out the main rotation are Katie Drummond, Mylee Jensen, Preslee Long, Sidney Big Eagle and Audi Miles.
Drummond recently returned from a broken hand and Jensen has scored in double figures in recent games.
Long used her speed and hustle to help shut down one of Pawnee’s better players, Lampton said.
