BARTLESVILLE AREA SPORTS REPORT

When in need, rely on Snead.

That was one of the messages radiating from Friday’s area high school girls showdown between Dewey and Caney Valley, played in Ramona.

Cassie Snead kneaded the nets for 30 points to lead the visiting Dewey Lady Doggers to a payback win, 52-41. (Caney Valley had won the first meeting, 55-54, in early December.)

Dewey completed the sweep Friday with the Bulldoggers riding a hot second quarter to a 63-46 victory.

Several other area teams also rose to winning heights last weekend.

Following are summaries.

GIRLS: Dewey 52, Caney Valley 41

Caney Valley suffered just its second loss in 13 games, both on the road.

Dewey (9-6), meanwhile, extended its winning streak to three in a row and scored 50-plus points for the fourth-straight game.

The Lady Doggers wrestled to a halftime lead, 34-28 and continued to play hard ball throughout the second half, giving up only 13 points.

“It was back and forth all night long,” Dewey head coach Michael Sanders said. “We held them scoreless in the fourth quarter until there was under a minute or two in the game.”

He felt keys to success included: “Holding them scoreless, taking care of the basketball at our end and milking the clock at our end and making them foul us late in the game and hitting our free throws.”

Rounding out Dewey’s top four scorers were Chanley Herren, 12 points; and Adrianna Hicks and C.J. Jones with four each.

It’s been a season of growth for Dewey. The Lady Doggers owned a 3-5 record through their first eight games and are 6-1 since, including a 5-1 mark since Christmas break.

“We’ve been through the wringer as far as playing tough teams,” Sanders said. “I give credit to our girls as far as being in tough games against schools that were bigger than us and schools that were more physical than us. … There’s not a better time right now than to start hitting on all cylinders.”

BOYS: Dewey 63, Caney Valley 46

The Bulldoggers (13-2) added another win to what is one of the best seasons in team history, at least in the past couple of decades.

The Doggers improved to 8-1 since early December.

Leading Dewey’s balanced scoring sheet were Zach Renfroe, 17; Austin Eastman, 14; Kooper Crawford, 11; and Tra Hicks, 10.

Zac Longan topped Caney Valley with 15 points, followed by Speck Gann with 11, according to the Dewey stats. Gann had the hot hand in the first half, scoring nine points to keep Dewey in it early.

By halftime, Dewey had built a 20-point lead.

“They kind of made some runs at us,” Dewey head coach Lance Knight said. “We weren’t comfortable with that (halftime lead) at all. … We got some stops and hit some shots. … I felt my guys really wanted that game. This has become kind of a rivalry. It was a fun game. It was a great crowd. It was a packed house.

Rounding out Dewey’s scorers were Gage Hawkins, five; Jay Murguia, three; and Karson Johnson, two.

Knight praised Murguia for his defensive effort, Crawford for his double-digit rebounding and Renfroe for his performance at point guard.

Dewey plays host Tuesday to Sperry.

BOYS: WCS 51, Owasso Prep 40

Even though the offense didn’t hit its full stride, the Wesleyan Christian School Mustangs (11-4) still careened to their fourth-straight victory and eighth double-digit victory of the season.

“We actually struggled finishing on offense,” WCS head coach Steven Cooks said. “Our shooting percentages were lower than usual. But I was proud they continued to play hard and show effort. It was good to see some heart and some fight.”

Owen Hay sank 22 points, followed by Hank Siemers with 11, to lead the charge.

“He (Siemers) has been playing really well,” said WCS head coach Steven Cooks. “He’s been doing a lot more of the intangible things to help us.”

Caleb Osborn and Draevyn Carter both brought a lot to the defensive side, Cooks added.

WCS will travel Tuesday to Nowata and play this weekend in the Mounds tourney.
