BARTLESVILLE AREA SPORTS REPORT

Following area basketball reports from earlier this week.

BARTLESVILLE

Tis the season for a variety of colds, flus and sundry related maladies.

But, as far as I know, there’s no name for the ailment that afflicted the Bartlesville High School basketball teams on Tuesday.

The rough label might be slow-start-itis.

The Lady Bruins and Bruins just couldn’t get it going early — and as a result were too far away to catch up at the end.

Don’t make any mistake — both Bartlesville teams fought valiantly in their first home game in 24 days. But, unfortunately, the Jenks High School teams got off to sizzling starts and basically were in control by halftime.

In the girls game, Jenks jumped out to a 15-7 lead and stretched it out to 14 points early in the second quarter, 26-12.

The Lady Bruins made a determined turnaround to trim the lead to 10 by halftime, 37-27.

Bartlesville hung around like green on a frog — and even got as close as four points in the fourth quarter.

But Jenks put on a late 13-2 spurt to win by 15, 60-45.

In the boys game it was even more pronounced. Jenks bolted out to a 16-2 lead and led at the end of the first quarter by 21 points, 27-6.

But, Bartlesville dug in and kept the score at about that level the rest of the way. Jenks finished with a 23-point win, 68-45.

Next up, Bartlesville will play host to an afternoon varsity doubleheader Friday. The girls are set to tip off at noon, followed by the boys’ game at approximately 1:30 p.m.

Following are closer looks at Bartlesville’s Tuesday games.

LADY BRUINS

Bartlesville competed hard — and well — to open the game.

Its shots simply would not fall. Jenks hurried out to a 4-0 lead before Bartlesville answered with a backdoor layup by Cadence Gray and a three-pointer off the fingertips of Kenzie Denny — off a kick-out pass by Gray.

But Jenks just slowly continued to widen the lead.

The Lady Bruins scored a flurry of points at the end of the first quarter on a bucket by Denny — off an offensive rebound by Shaylyn Ishem — and two Sami Sheaffer free throws.

Jenks opened the second quarter with a blitz of scoring to go ahead by 14, 26-12.

As they would most of the rest of the game, Bartlesville kept trying to chip away at the lead.

An Addison Jones’ deuce made it a 12-point game, 26-14, and a minute or two later Sheaffer scored off a backcourt steal to clip the margin to nine, 34-25.

A Sheaffer three-pointer early in the third quarter reduced the gap to five points, 37-32, and Bartlesville trailed by only two points after three quarters, 45-43.

But Jenks caught fire early in the fourth quarter to go back up by double-digits.

In the final three minutes Bartlesville had to start fouling and Jenks hit just enough free throws to keep the game out of reach.

Sheaffer reached the 20-point level again and Denny scored in double figures.

BRUINS

What can one say?

A 21-point difference at the end of the first quarter pretty much told it all.

Jenks would push the lead to 30-7 early in the second quarter before Brycen Gutierrez dropped in a three-pointer for Bartlesville’s 10th point.

Titus Huck, Gutierrez and Skyler Carter scored more points in the second quarter for Bartlesville to bring the margin to 22 points, 41-19.

Hudson Eads and Kim Maire were among Bartlesville’s third-quarter scorers, but Jenks still increased its lead back to 30 points, 59-29.

Hunter Holmes, Maire, Bryce Lee and Tylan Berry each scored buckets in the first few minutes of the fourth quarter for Bartlesville and the Bruins made a gritty 16-9 run in the fourth quarter — capped by Jackson Barta’s three-pointer — to get within 23, 68-45, by the final buzzer.

Some other BHS scorers in the game included Dennis Duncan, Trae Collins and Sutton Huff.

_____

BOYS: Dewey 56, Pawhuska 43

Dewey bolted to a 17-2 lead and the rest of the way had to hold off a scrappy Pawhuska team.

“They’re (Pawhuska) going to be a better team down the line,” said Dewey head coach Lance Knight. “They didn’t give up but I don’t think they ever got it under 10. … We played really well. … We played good defense.”

Zach Renfroe popped in 18 points to lead Dewey, followed by Jay Murguia with 12, Austin Eastman with eight, Kooper Crawford with seven. Tra Hicks with five, Gage Hawkins with three and Karson Johnson with three.

Dax Godsey led Pawhuska with 11 points, followed by Antwine Hamilton with eighth, Kane Foreman with seven, Darien West with seven, Jadon Spicer with six and Jenson Snodgrass with one.

“We played good defense,” summarized Knight, and Crawford returned after missing a few games.

Renfroe continues to upgrade his performance.

“He’s what a point guard is supposed to be,” Knight said. “He has very few turnovers and he’s just a general out there.”

_____

GIRLS: Caney Valley 73, Barnsdall 25

A little bit of press and a lot of defense powered the Caney Valley Lady Trojans to their seventh-straight win.

Considering they weren’t at 100 percent, the victory seemed even more impressive.

Five girls felt under the weather but still suited up, Caney Valley coach Deric Longan said.

“I was proud they were willing to gut it out for their teammates,” he said. “The girls who don’t start came off the bench and gave it their all.”

Caney Valley took control early with a full-court press and “played solid defense most of the night,” Longan said.

The Lady Trojans didn’t allow double-digit points in any quarter and led 37-14 at halftime.

Presley Smith smoked the nets for 21 points to lead Caney Valley, followed by Adesta Henry with 14 and Harper Watts with 12. Rounding out the Lady Trojan scorers were Khloe Crawford, nine; Roxy Hawkins, eight; Abby Daigle, four; Faith Davis, four; and Sydni Brown, one.

_____

BOYS: Copan 35, Prue 23

Copan boys got the best of both possibilities — they endured a learning experience and also pulled out a double-digit win.

Prue came out in a box-and-one defense to try to control Copan’s leading scorer Shooter Brewington.

The strategy worked to an extent as Brewington scored seven points.

“We overloaded the box and didn’t do a very good job of shooting layups,” said Copan coach Kolton Stacy.

However, freshman Payton Call came through with 14 points, including a trio of triples.

Slayton Brewington hauled down double-digit rebounds and Zavier Allston and Zane Stricklin distinguished themselves on defense, Stacy said.

Even with the offensive challenge, Stacy praised his team for allowing only 23 points in a road game.

Teegan Caron continues to work his way into the top-notch basketball shape after coming off the football field, Stacy said.

“He does a lot of things for us,” the coach explained. “He rebounds, he plays the back side of our zone and he runs the one (point guard) for us.”

_____

BOYS: Caney Valley 67, Barnsdall 35

Speck Gann heated the nets with 28 points, followed by Zac Longan with 21, to lead the Caney Valley Trojans.

“We got off to a slow start,” said Caney Valley head coach Tug Brinker.

But, the Trojans turned it on in the second quarter to outscore Barnsdall, 22-13, to carry a 14-point lead into halftime, 33-19.
