Bullpup Sweep: Caney Valley (KS) Boys and Girls Punch Tickets to Sub-State Semis

BARTLESVILLE AREA SPORTS REPORT

The Caney Valley (KS) Bullpups and Lady Bullpups both advanced to Class 3A sub-state semifinal action last week.

The Bullpups (16-5) travel to Neodesha (KS) (18-5) on Tuesday. The two teams split their last two regular-season games. The Lady Bullpups hit the road for Saline (KS) (15-4) on Wednesday. Both games are at 6 p.m.

The Bullpups defeated Halstead 54-34 in the sub-state quarterfinals last Thursday in Caney (KS). The Bullpups scored only 14 points in the first quarter, but found the nets in the second half. 

“We played good defense the whole game,” head coach Mark Washburn said. “We didn’t do a good job on the boards until the third quarter. That is what allowed us to break the game open.” 

Payton Darden led Bullpup scoring with 19. Other Bullpup scorers included Layne Denny (9), Gavin Messner (5), and James Kistler (4). Traxcyn Garton and Lowrey Bruce added three each, while Jesse Hendren and Kale Owen had two apiece.

Girls: Caney Valley 61, Smoky Valley 40 

The Lady Bullpups (16-8) went up 37-17 at halftime in their sub-state 61-40 win over Smokey Valley last Friday in Caney (KS). The Lady Bullpups were up only five after the first quarter, but their offense exploded in the second quarter with 22 points, going into halftime leading 37-17. 

“Our team did a good job of sharing the ball and executing our game plan,” head coach Emily Washburn said. 

Elyn Washburn scored 22 points, including three treys. Other Caney Valley scorers included Ameris King-Dunn (12), Molleigh Kaminska (10), Alex Theiss (9), and Alysa Scott (8).
