BARTLESVILLE AREA SPORTS REPORT

After displaying glimpses of physical competitive equity during the first eight games, the Bartlesville High School Bruin basketball team surges into January with a busy — but exciting — week ahead.

Thursday will pull up the curtain on the 23rd Annual ConocoPhillips/Arvest Tournament at the Bruin Fieldhouse.

This is actually the 24th-scheduled year for the tournament, but it was snowed out in 2010-11.

The Bruins are scheduled to battle Mustang at 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

This is one of the most rugged COP/Arvest boys fields ever — six 6A schools, three teams with two-or-fewer losses and only three teams with losing records.

The full Thursday boys’ schedule is:

11:30 a.m.: Tulsa Union (5-1) vs. Tulsa McLain (3-3).

2:30 p.m.: Broken Arrow (6-1) vs. Yukon (2-8).

5:30 p.m.: Owasso (7-3) vs. Tulsa Rogers (0-8).

8:30 p.m.: Bartlesville (3-5) vs. Mustang (8-2).

Play will continue Friday and Saturday.

Bartlesville will be seeking its first COP/Arvest boys title since the 2011-12 season. The Bruins advanced to the final in 2021-22 and last season — although that was due to a forfeit win in the semifinal.

As mentioned above, the Bruins exuded some promise during their first eight games for new head coach Jake Christenson.

Christenson said the Bruins’ biggest challenge is not its collective physical assists but its aggregate mental/emotional approach.

He took charge of a Bruin program that’s won only six games the past two seasons and has recorded only one winning season in the past nine years.

“We’ve been beat up so long by 6A teams … our mental toughness is not too good,” he explained. “We don’t believe in our abilities to go beat these teams right now. At least we now know what to attack.”

Christenson said he’s also still trying to set his main rotation.

“Some of the guys are kind of Jekyll-and-Hyde how they play,” he said. “It depends on the night. That’s kind of tough to coach around.”

But Christenson said he felt his team progressed during the Christmas break practices.

By the end of this coming weekend the Bruins should know a lot more about themselves and their potential.

With one more win they will surpass their victory total for last season and the season before.

LADY BRUINS

This will be the eighth year the COP/Arvest tourney has featured a girls’ bracket.

The Lady Bruins won the first-place trophy in the 2018-19 version and advanced last season to the championship final and losing to Broken Arrow.

The Lady Bruins — which are coached by Justyn Shaw — will open tourney play at 7 p.m. Thursday. Other girls’ games that day will be 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Below are the boys and girls brackets, followed by Bartlesville scores from previous years.
