BARTLESVILLE AREA SPORTS REPORT

The Oklahoma Wesleyan University Lady Eagles basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak just in time for the Thanksgiving break, setting the stage for a momentum shift as they gear up for a seven-game schedule before the end of the year.

And Coach Heidi Messer says she’s optimistic about the team's chances. The Lady Eagles downed Haskell Indian Nations University 66-45 on Nov. 25 in Bartlesville. After starting the season 3-0, the Lady Eagles hit a rough patch, dropping three straight games before rebounding with the win.

“This win was significant. Basketball is a game of swings, so is a season sometimes,” said coach Messer. “We’ve had some close but frustrating losses, so it was a great boost heading into the break on a win.”

Messer’s optimism is fueled by key veterans, led by seniors Gracie Alexander, Khassidy Warr, Khamille Warr, and Ashlyn Baker

Alexander poured in 17 points in OKWU's win over Haskell, leading OKWU in scoring. She also hauled in five rebounds, three steals and three assists.

“Gracie gave us a real offensive boost early on and has shown for four years the ability to be productive,” said coach Messer.

Kamryn Phoenix joined Alexander in playing well on both sides of the ball, scoring 14 points, grabbing five rebounds, recording two steals, and dishing out five assists.

“Kamryn came into the game and took a big defensive assignment and played consistently on both ends,” coach Messer said.

Other key players included: Khassidy Warr (10 points, five rebounds and two steals); Khmaille Warr (seven points, seven rebounds and one assist); and Baker (six points, six rebounds and four assists).

Next up, the Lady Eagles travel to Avial (Mo.) University on Wednesday.
