Although we’re not talking boxing, Wesleyan Christian School’s football offense could feature a mighty one-two punch that could knock several opponents aside.

With a year of lump-taking, growing pains and tempering in the oven of adversity to toughen him up, senior Hudson Baker returns at quarterback.

“Last year was his first year as starting quarterback, sometimes he had that deer-in-the-headlights look,” said new Mustang head coach Fabian Quiroz. “He’s running a new system this year and being a really good leader. … He’s always studying the playbook and asking questions.”

Complementing Baker will be ground-pounding senior running back Roman Edwards.

“He’s a big boy,” said Quiroz. “He’s our strongest guy in the program. Both of these guys will be our leading force on offense. They’re both coaching boys that are leaders in the locker room.”

Baker is penciled in as a cornerback on defense, but Edwards might not see many defensive snaps.

“He’ll probably play only at running back, we’ll probably need him to carry the ball 20 or 30 times a game.”

Edwards and Baker are part of a solid senior class of seven veterans, Quiroz noted.

He’s impressed with his group of Mustangs overall.

“The weight room and conditioning has been really good,” said Quiroz. “I think the boys took to offseason workouts well.”

The Mustangs might be a little young at linebacker. Josh Shambles led this crew during spring ball by taking first-string reps.

“He’s coming in hungry,” said Quiroz. “He’s hungry to compete and he’s hungry to prove himself.”

Quiroz said he is learning to adjust to working with eight-man football.

“For the most part it’s been an easy transition,” he said. “I think for us to be successful we’ve got to know what our job is and execute it. I told the players there are two things, if you give me good effort and a good attitude you’re going to have success.”

That formula goes beyond football, he said.

In a more game day vein, he said a key for the Mustangs will be to “block a lot better. Our offensive linemen have to know who to block and who to pull to. … If we just execute and give everything we can, we’re going to have a good season.”
