SEPTEMBER 1963
College, Dewey and Copan high schools all went three-for-three on the final weekend of September.
Col-Hi outlasted Tulsa Central, 21-13; Dewey dusted off Pawhuska, 30-20; and Copan held off Chelsea, 16-14.
COPAN: This one came down to the final 10 seconds, when quarterback Bruce Hinkle connected with Dean Price for a 62-yard touchdown pass play. In fact both teams scored in the final 30 seconds. Price outran three defensive players on his way to the end zone. Fullback Danny Cook then blasted through the line for the two-point conversion. Copan players had dedicated the game to teammate Carl Marvin Baker, Jr., who was in the hospital as a result of a head injury suffered in practice earlier in the week. Kenny Trotter had filled Baker’s place on the defensive line. Chelsea’s quarterback Dave Hester rushed for 171 yards.
DEWEY: The Bulldoggers scored two defensive touchdowns the first six minutes to set the stage for the victory. The first happened when 145-pound senior linebacker Eddie Egan broke into the Pawhuska backfield, stole the pitch and ran 31 yards to paydirt. The second occurred on an 84-yard pick six by Johnny Woody. Dewey built its lead to 30-6 on Robert Fugate’s receiving touchdown off a pass from Woody. Pawhuska scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, one of them on Marvin Clark’s 84-yard run.
COL-HI: Joel Berryhill and Jon Axton hooked up for two fourth-quarter touchdowns (26 yards, 11 yards) to elevate Col-Hi to the triumph. Charlie Randle set up the second of those touchdowns with a 36-yard punt return. Randle also scored Bartlesville’s first touchdown of the game after completing a 53-yard run while weaving from sideline to sideline. The officials kept the action going — they called only one penalty — on Central — in the game.
