Scouting the Red, White, and Blue: What Fans Need to Know

The U.S. Men’s National Team enters Friday’s FIFA World Cup opening match against Paraguay carrying the weight of nearly a century of soccer history, evolving from an early global pioneer to modern tournament host. Friday's match at Los Angeles Stadium (SoFi Stadium) marks the official start of a tournament where expectations are vastly different from past decades.

The American men found immediate success at the inaugural tournament in 1930, capturing a historic third-place finish in Uruguay. Twenty years later, the team orchestrated one of soccer's biggest upsets by defeating England 1-0 at the 1950 tournament in Brazil. Following that historic victory, the program fell into a 40-year qualification drought, failing to reach the global stage again until 1990.

The turning point for modern American soccer arrived when the United States hosted the tournament in 1994, advancing to the Round of 16 and igniting domestic interest in the sport. The program reached its modern pinnacle in 2002 in South Korea and Japan, defeating rivals Portugal and Mexico to advance to the quarterfinals. The team reached the knockout rounds again in both 2010 and 2014. After a devastating failure to qualify in 2018, a young core led by forward Christian Pulisic rebuilt the program, successfully returning to the Round of 16 in late 2022.

The current squad features a roster playing in Europe's top leagues, including Pulisic, midfielder Weston McKennie, and forward Folarin Balogun.

To advance past the opening stage, this generation must navigate a balanced Group D that features distinct tactical challenges from three different continents.

Following the opener against Paraguay's defense-heavy squad, the Americans travel to Seattle Stadium (Lumen Field) for a June 19 match against Australia.

The group stage concludes back in Southern California on June 25 against Turkey, which secured its tournament berth through a grueling European playoff campaign in March.
