The Bartlesville High School Lady Bruins (11-5) softball team strengthened its grip on second place in Class 6A-District 2 Thursday with a decisive 5-1 victory over Bixby on the Lady Spartans' home field. The crucial road win allows the Lady Bruins to complete a regular-season sweep of Bixby, keeping them securely in the No. 2 spot in the district standings as they continue to chase undefeated district leader Broken Arrow.
Back in August, the Lady Bruins defeated Bixby 3-2 at home. BHS fell to Broken Arrow 5-1 on the road and will meet them again next Tuesday in Bartlesville.
The Lady Bruins jumped on Bixby early Thursday, building a 4-1 lead through the first three innings. Josie Childers ignited the offense in the first inning with a single that brought home Erin Bridendolph and Londyn Bond to make it 2-0. In the second, Maddie Nachbor executed a sacrifice fly to right field to score Lola Redington. Bixby answered with a lone run in the bottom half of the frame, bringing the score to 3-1.
Bartlesville extended its lead in the top of the third when Jazmyne Campbell hit a grounder and reached on an error, allowing Bridendolph to cross the plate and extend the advantage to 4-1. Bond later provided the exclamation point in the top of the seventh, launching a solo home run to center field to cap the scoring.
In the circle, Alison Rosson put together a stellar complete-game performance. She pitched all seven innings, scattering six hits and allowing just one run while striking out seven batters.
Bond spearheaded the offensive explosion for the Lady Bruins, going 2-for-4 with a home run, an RBI, and two runs scored. Bridendolph turned in a strong performance at the plate, finishing 1-for-3 while scoring twice, while Redington also crossed the plate. Savannah Alden sparked the lineup with a hit, and Childers delivered a crucial swing by driving in two runs on a hit of her own.
The Lady Bruins, under the leadership of Holden Yoder, swept Sapulpa in the last week of August, 2-1 and 7-0, and took out Yukon 10-2 on Sept. 1.
Head coach Holden Yoder is in his first year at Bartlesville.
Next up, Bartlesville hosts undefeated Broken Arrow Tuesday at 7 p.m.
