DEWEY

Okay, so Dewey didn’t quite make it to state — although it couldn’t have come closer than a one-run loss in the regional final.

But the campaign — with Riley Allen as the first-year coach — still deserves to be categorized as magnificent.

Among the notable highlights — 29 wins and an appearance in the regional ‘if’ final.

Perhaps this was the most success ever by a first-year Dewey softball coach. If not, it certainly ranks up there with the best.

“It was a fun season,” said Allen, who took the reins from successful skipper Niki Keck, who moved on to coach college softball.

Allen did it all with only four seniors — three of them everyday starters. That means he returns a powerful core for next year.

“We should still have a good run,” Allen said. “We should be a good ball club.”

Allen still feels the disappointment of how the season ended with a one-run loss to Valliant in last week’s regional final hosted by Dewey, 4-3.

Allen said he believes his Lady Doggers were the better team, but in postseason play, “you need to have the breaks go your way.”

Dewey faced Valliant three times in the regional. Dewey won one of them, 14-1, but lost the other two by the identical score of 4-3. Dewey also buried Beggs, 14-1, in an elimination game.

Even though they didn’t get to the Big Dance, Dewey players still turned in one of the team’s best-ever regular season showings. In addition to defeating Bartlesville, 5-2, Dewey put together winning streaks of eight and five games and ran table (12-0) in district play.

In addition to beating Class 6A city rival Bartlesville, other signature wins included knocking off powerful Class 6A opponents Broken Arrow, 5-1, Putnam City North, 7-0, and Jenks, 6-4; defeating multiple Class 5A programs, including Collinsville (twice), 5-2 and 6-3; and Bishop Kelley, 11-2.

Leading this crew of outstanding athletes were senior pitcher Kyla Overton and junior slugger Londyn Bond (.615 BA, 19 HR, 8 2B, 5 3B, 60 RBI, 52 R). Overton’s offensive numbers included a .550 BA, 17 2B, 2 3B, 15 HR, 55 RBI.

Chanley Herren, Kadynce Lavasseur, Jaelynn Smith, Aubree Bellar, Landry Herren, MacKenzie Hedges, Addi Jones, Keirstyn Anderson, and Macie Dugger were among the team’s other main offensive contributors.

Smith belted seven doubles and four triples and Lavasseur batted .406.

Overton’s pitching stats included a 22-6 record, 165.2 IP, 145 K’s and a 1.86 earned run average. Second pitching option Brooke Eckert appeared in 10 games and fashioned a 6-2 record and 3.41 ERA.
