BARTLESVILLE AREA SPORTS REPORT
The Bartlesville High School softball team will have to wait another day before the Class 6A state tournament gets underway, thanks to Mother Nature bringing some much-needed rain to Oklahoma.
The single-elimination tournament, originally scheduled to begin Thursday at Firelake Ball Fields in Shawnee, has been pushed back. Games are now set for Friday and Saturday, with the championship finals scheduled for Monday.
The delay shifts the schedule for the Lady Bruins (27-12), who are set to face undefeated Broken Arrow (35-0) in the opening round Friday at noon.
"Broken Arrow is a really good team, and they’ve had a very impressive season," Bartlesville head coach Holden Yoder said. "We are aware of the challenge that’s ahead of us, but it’s one that we’re excited about. We’ve talked all year long about approaching every workout, practice, and game the exact same way, and this game is no exception. We have a big challenge ahead of us, but that also means we have a great opportunity as well."
The tournament's elite field of eight features heavy hitters, including defending state champion Mustang (26-7), Choctaw (27-7), Moore (24-8), Southmoore (27-12), Piedmont (28-11), and Enid (38-1), alongside the top-ranked Lady Tigers led by head coach Randall King
Friday's matchup marks the third time Yoder's squad will see Broken Arrow this season. The Lady Tigers took both regular-season contests, winning 5-1 and 11-7. Despite the previous outcomes, the Bartlesville dugout sees the familiarity as an advantage.
"After having played each other twice, there are no secrets on either side," Yoder said. "We felt like we had opportunities in both games to swing the momentum in our direction, but we were unable to do so. Our girls are eager for another chance to capitalize on those opportunities, and I’m excited to watch them compete."
The single-elimination structure leaves zero room for error, a reality the Lady Bruins know well. In last year's state tournament, Bartlesville was eliminated in the first round following a narrow 6-5 loss to Mustang, who went on to defeat Choctaw 8-2 for the title.
However, Yoder believes his team's depth and postseason unpredictability could work in their favor.
"One of the best things about the postseason is you never know who’s going to step up," Yoder said. "While a single-elimination format does add some pressure to the situation, it also means anything can happen. We’re fortunate to have a team full of players who have come through for us in various big moments throughout the season. I have no idea who that will be this week, but I’m excited to watch and find out."
Before heading to Shawnee, the community will have a chance to support the team. A state tournament send-off is scheduled for Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Bruin Softball Complex. With rain in the forecast, please check with the Bartlesville Lady Bruins Softball Facebook page to see if the send-off is still on schedule.
