BARTLESVILLE AREA SPORTS REPORT

With several key components returning from last year’s 22-11 team, the Caney Valley High School softball program appears primed to make another feisty journey to success.

Veteran head coach Andy Fox returns his main two pitchers from last season —right-handers  Makenzie McCabe and Anderly Edwards and battle-tested catches Roxy Hawkins and Kalynn Edwards.

Caney Valley hurlers tossed five shutouts last season and held opponents to only one run six times.

Edwards earned the District Pitcher of the Year honors last season.

“She hits her spots and changes speed well,” Fox said about Edwards. “That’s what makes her good.”

McCabe “has a little more velocity and a nice change-up,” Fox added. “As a pair they do a really good job.”

Riley Brooks is back as the infield captain after being named last year as the District Shortstop of the Year.

“She’s a really great defensive player,” Fox said. “She’s a good hitter. She’s a good, exciting player.”

In fact Fox’s group should have plenty of charismatic chemistry.

“We’re still a young team,” Fox said. “We’re just getting better as we go on. That’s all you can ask.”

The Lady Trojans still need to retool some of their defense and offense due to the gradation loss of some key talent off last year’s team.

“We have some kids that are stepping up in the outfield,” Fox said. “For us it’s going to be getting the offense going. … I’m excited. … The younger group is coming up and if it keeps developing we’re going to have a good season.”

The Lady Trojans open their season on the road August 12 at Oklahoma Union. Caney Valley went 2-1 last season against Oklahoma Union.

Caney Valley’s Class 2A district will include Oktaha, Pawnee and Mounds. They finished 2-0 last season against Mounds but didn’t play Oktaha or Pawnee.

Caney Valley High School’s Roxy Hawkins returns as the Lady Trojans catcher..
