BARTLESVILLE AREA SPORTS REPORT

New Bartlesville High School head football coach Matt Hennesy continues to solidify his coaching staff.

School athletic director Thad Dilbeck confirmed Thursday afternoon that Tyler Hughes has been brought on board to coach the offensive lineman and Mason Fine has been hired as the offensive coordinator.

Bartlesville announced last week the hiring of Hennesy as the 12th head coach in Bruin grid history.

Hennesy moved over from Pawhuska, where he won 72 games and made the playoffs eight-straight seasons, including three appearances in the Class A state semifinals.

Having developed success earlier in his career at Muskogee, Hennesy takes charge of a Bruin 6A-II football program that hasn’t recorded a winning record since 2015 and finished 3-8 the past two seasons.

Hughes comes over from Pawhuska where he helped develop the ultra-successful Huskie program.

Fine comes in with a broad and impressive resume. His most recent job has been as the offensive coordinator at Muskogee High School.

He graduated from Locust Grove High School — where he played for Hennesy as head coach — and played college football for North Texas.

Fine set the Oklahoma high school record for career passing yards and touchdowns. He twice won the coveted Gatorade Player of the Year award.

He blossomed at North Texas and was twice named the Offensive Player of the Year (2017, 2018) by the Conference USA. For his career, he threw 91 touchdowns, and for his final two seasons, he heaved 54 touchdown passes and only 12 interceptions.

Fine later played and started in the Canadian Football League for the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

He was part of the Muskogee staff for the 2025 season for a rebuilding Rougher team that finished 6-6, including a 48-0 win against Bartlesville. The Roughers were eliminated from the 6A-II quarterfinals in a 21-20 squeaker by Putnam City.

Hennesy’s coaching career is replete with redirecting struggling programs. Pawhuska plummeted to an 0-10 record in 2017, the year before he arrived.

In 2018, his first season, Pawhuska finished 6-5. By 2020, the Huskies surged to an 11-2 record and a semifinal spot.

Obviously, it would not be fair to create specific expectations or timetables. But based on history, and the energy, style and vision Hennesy brings to the job, a turnaround appears very likely.

Without going into too many details, the Bruins are set to bring back a quarterback with 15 career starts under his belt, multiple proven receivers, experienced strength up front, four to six proven defensive stalwarts, and other warriors with potential.

The anticipation by Bruin football fans could rival that of 2006 after Ron Smith left Owasso to come to Bartlesville, or in 2018 after Lee Blankenship came on board.
