BARTLESVILLE AREA SPORTS REPORT

Oct. 31, 2025

By Mike Tupa

Following are summaries of Thursday’s area prep football action. Following up reports with more details is planned for early next week.

BARTLESVILLE

Bartlesville High School is getting downright offensive.

For the second time in three weeks, the surging Bruins piled up more than 40 points en route to a vital District 6A-II-2 victory.

With Thursday’s 41-0 win at Putnam City West — during which Bartlesville scored on its first four possessions of the game — Bartlesville (2-7, 2-4) clinched a playoff spot for the fourth-straight year.

That extends the program’s record for the most consecutive seasons qualifying for the postseason.

Thursday’s final margin pretty much reflected Bartlesville’s complete dominance. Putnam City West reached the red zone only once — and the Bruin defense transformed into a brick wall to deny the Patriots a touchdown.

On the offensive side, the Bruins were almost unstoppable in the first half, scoring five touchdowns — four of them in the first quarter.

Touchdown makers in the opening period included Sutton Williams with two short scoring bursts, Mathew Sears off a six-yard sweep, and Daeton Stevens with a six-yard bolt. Kicker Dillon Burson added four extra points in the quarter.

In the second quarter, Boden Roberts hauled in a pass from Michael Kent for a 27-yard scoring play, and the Bruins carried a 35-0 lead into halftime.

After intermission, the Bruin offense drove the ball 93 yards — after the defense had stopped Putnam City inside Bartlesville's 10-yard line — to score its final touchdown on a scoring aerial from Kent to Sears that covered 10 yards. Sears became just the second Bruin this season to score both on the ground and through the air.

Several Bartlesville defensive plays loomed large — perhaps none bigger than Ivan Griffith’s interception and long return, or Cale Granger’s break-up of a potential touchdown reception on a fade route to the back corner of the end zone.

PLAYOFFS: CANEY VALLEY (Kan.) Bullpups vs. GALENA (Kan.)

The Bullpups (8-1) are headed to the second round of the playoffs after they knocked off Galena, 44-12, in the first round of the Kansas State Class 2A playoffs.

After a slow start on offense in the first quarter, Caney Valley pumped it up in the final three periods. The Pups rushed for 219 yards in the second half (after having accumulated only 88 in the first half) and pretty much ran Galena off the field.

Jace Buckley ran for two touchdowns and four two-point conversions to spearhead Caney Valley’s attack. Traxcyn Garton added two rushing scores and Layne Denny and Konner Paulie each crossed the goal line once.

Caney Valley defensive highlights included two sacks apiece by Benton Spillman and Boone White and an interception by Drake Roberds.

NOWATA AT OKLAHOMA UNION

Nowata took control of this one early, but the Oklahoma Union Cougars displayed plenty of fight until the final buzzer in the area rivalry showdown hosted by Oklahoma Union.

Both teams scored in the final four-and-a-half minutes to settle the final score at 56-28 in favor of Nowata.

Nowata (2-7) improved to 2-4 in district but likely will be on the outside of the playoffs looking in, barring a couple of major upsets these last two weeks.

Oklahoma Union (1-8, 1-5) will face a rugged test next week against Pawnee (6-2, 4-1) in the season finale.

Scoring touchdowns late in Thursday’s game were Bode Smith on a pass from Caleb Woolman for Nowata and Elijah Johnson on a run for Oklahoma Union.

HOMINY AT BARNSDALL

Two other area teams collided in a rivalry scrap.

Hominy (7-2, 6-0) slowly built its lead and won, 38-14.

The loss torpedoed Barnsdall’s hopes for a playoff berth while Hominy secured the district title.

Barnsdall (5-4, 2-4) could still finish in a fourth-place tie with Ketchum. But Ketchum owns the head-to-head tiebreaker.
