BARTLESVILLE AREA SPORTS REPORT

The Caney Valley (Kansas) Bullpups dominated the Galena Bulldogs in a lopsided 52-6 victory to capture the Kansas Class 2A, District 1 championship and complete an undefeated 8-0 regular season, marking what head coach Criss Davis said is only the fourth undefeated regular season in school history.

"This is a great accomplishment," Davis said

The undefeated Bullpups will now host Jayhawk Linn on Thursday at 6 p.m. for a first-round playoff matchup. Caney Valley enters the bracket as the No. 2 seed after a coin toss determined Silverlake earned the No. 1 spot.

Last season, the 9-2 Bullpups hosted three home playoff games before falling to Osage City (Kansas), finishing just one win shy of the state semifinals.

On the field against Galena, the Bullpups established total control from the opening kickoff, building a massive 44-6 lead by halftime. Caney Valley outgained the Bulldogs 276 to 92 in total yards, fueled by a rushing attack that racked up 225 yards while the defense held Galena in check.

"We did everything we could against Galena — held them to under 100 yards in offense," Davis said.

Traxcyne Garton led the ground game with a game-high 130 yards on nine carries, while Jace Buckley added 48 yards on five attempts. Galena struggled to find any rhythm against the defense, managing just 86 yards on 31 rushing attempts.

Garton started the scoring early in the first quarter with a 5-yard touchdown run. Layne Denny then connected with McVay on a successful two-point conversion pass to make it 8-0. Moments later, Buckley punched in a 2-yard touchdown run, with Denny hitting McVay again for the conversion. Garton broke the game open later in the period, breaking free for an 82-yard punt return touchdown to push the lead to 22-0.

Caney Valley added to its lead in the second quarter as Garton scored again on the ground, finding the end zone on a 44-yard touchdown run before Boone White tacked on the two-point conversion run. Denny then went to the air, connecting with Konner Paulie for a 9-yard touchdown reception, followed by a conversion run from White to extend the lead to 38-0. Paulie finished the game as the team's leading receiver with two catches for 51 yards, while Denny went 2-for-8 passing for 51 yards.

Galena briefly interrupted the shutout later in the second quarter when they intercepted a pass and returned it 89 yards for their lone touchdown of the night. However, Caney Valley answered immediately before the break. Paulie intercepted a Galena pass and returned it 55 yards for a pick-six, sending the Bullpups into the locker room up 44-6.

Caney Valley added one final score in the third quarter. White, who finished with 14 yards on five carries, found the end zone on a 9-yard touchdown run. Denny then found Garton for the final two-point conversion to make it 52-6. Gunner Franklin also contributed to the ground game with an 8-yard carry.

Despite the high stakes and historic season, Davis credited his players for the program's success.

"It's great that I get paid to do what I love — coach football and these kids," Davis said. "They're doing all of the work, I'm just along for the ride."

Caney Valley (Kansas) Bullpup Jacob McVey (16) gains yardage during an earlier game this season. The undefeated Bullpups are the Kansas Class 2A, District 1 champions and host a first-round playoff game in Caney, Kansas, Thursday at 6 p.m.
