BARTLESVILLE AREA SPORTS REPORT

Friday’s wood bat baseball league game at Bill Doenges Memorial Stadium revived memories of the “Batman” TV series of the 1960s.

During every Bat Fight giant words appeared on the screen like “WHAM!”, “BANG-ETH!”, “POW!” “ZLOPP!”, “KAPOW!”.

Those are the kind of sounds produced by the bats of the Bartlesville Doenges Toyota Indians during a smashing win against the Dallas-Fort Worth Ravages in DBAT League action.

No super heroes needed — but the Indians still got a super effort from its offense during the 8-5 victory.

Not only did the win shatter Bartlesville’s five-game losing streak — it also avenged a doubleheader sweep earlier this month by the Renegades at Doenges.

The teams collided again today on Saturday and we'll have a full report soon.

Indians’ head coach John Pannell pulled all the right strings in what has to be considered a signature triumph at approximately the halfway point of the season.

The DBAT competition features a preponderance of college-experienced players by most teams, while the Indians are heavily reliant on high school talent or graduates from this year. With that in mind, Pannell called on a couple of college pitchers — Ryan Jones and Braelen Pippin (Oklahoma Wesleyan) — to eat up several quality innings.

Among the Indians’ regular pitching staff, Zane Stricklin and Zane Griggs, both turned in clutch outings.

The game did not start out on a promising note for the Indians.

The Ravages romped out to a 3-0 lead on a three-run homer in the top of the first off Jones.

But Jones stiffened and didn’t allow another run the next two innings.

The Indians’ offense, meanwhile, unleashed its crushing attack early.

Jaxon Zaun ripped a single to lead off the bottom of the first, sparking a two-run rally. Kael Siemers followed with a single. Zaun and Siemers both scored, on a Brett Eaves’ ground-out and a Sam Marcella hit, respectively.

Bartlesville added three more runs in the second inning after Hunter Shea led off with a single. Shea eventually stole home to tie the score, 3-3. Siemers then singled home Zaun and Eaves lifted a sacrifice fly to send Siemers home to put the Indians ahead, 5-3.

The Indians tacked on three more runs in the third, including a RBI single by Zaun, to make it an 8-3 game.

Bartlesville threatened in the bottom of the sixth when Eaves and Brenden Asher both got into scoring position. But Bartlesville left them standing.

The Ravages clawed out a couple more runs during the game’s remainder but didn’t generate any major noise, thanks largely to clutch strikeouts by Jones, Stricklin, Griggs, and Pippin and some other sharp defensive play. Stricklin racked up a bases-loaded strikeout and Pippin wrapped the game with a strikeout.

The Indians are just a couple of weeks away from the annual Glen Winget Memorial tourney.
