BARTLESVILLE AREA SPORTS REPORT
For Copan High School sophomore Macee Secondine, the path to becoming a versatile student-athlete started in the third grade. Now a key multi-sport contributor for the Lady Hornets, Secondine is using the lessons she learns on the field and in the classroom to pave the way for a future in medicine.
Her dedication on and off the diamond makes her the latest featured standout in Bartlesville Area Sports Report's Area Game Changer series. The twice-weekly showcase highlights dynamic competitors across 12 area schools who transform their teams through leadership, effort, and heart.
Secondine, who plays first base for the Copan softball team, balances a demanding year-round athletic schedule that includes basketball, track, and cheerleading. She credits her early start in softball with giving her a foundational understanding of the game that pays dividends at the varsity level.
"The early start has helped me a lot with understanding the game more as I’ve played through the years," Secondine said.
That experience translates into standout moments on the diamond. When reflecting on her career so far, one specific district matchup stands out above the rest.
"One game I will never forget is when we played Shidler in districts," Secondine said. "I was up to bat and I hit the ball. It almost goes out of the fence, hits the fence, and falls back into the field."
While big plays define the action on the field, the unique team culture at Copan makes playing softball special. Secondine highlighted the program's annual midnight practice as a favorite tradition that brings the team together before the season even begins.
"We have a midnight practice every year where we get to team bond and have our first softball practice of the year," Secondine said.
That dedication does not go unnoticed by the Lady Hornets coaching staff. Coach Ashleigh McCause praised Secondine's relentless commitment to both her team and her school community.
"Macee is another great kid who represents our school so well," McCause said. "She is involved in just about every sport and also serves as an FFA officer. She is a great athlete and had a really good softball season this year as well."
While many young athletes look to collegiate or professional stars for inspiration, Secondine finds her role model much closer to home. Her biggest athletic and personal influence is her older sister, Zoey Secondine, a recent Copan graduate.
"I look up to her so I can be as good as her one day," Secondine said. "I want to have a positive energy that she has. Even if we were losing by a lot, she still has positive energy and she never lets anyone down."
That focus on leadership and positivity is also nurtured in the classroom. Secondine notes that her favorite subject, agricultural education, directly influences how she interacts with her squad.
"It helps me out on the field with leadership to my other teammates," Secondine said.
McCause noted that Secondine’s drive to improve is a constant across all of her endeavors.
"She is always showing up, putting in the effort, and striving to do more and get better," McCause said. "That same work ethic carries over into the classroom, where she continues to work hard and give her best."
Outside of sports and academics, Secondine stays busy working with her show pig, Sassy Mae, and spending time with her boyfriend, friends, and family.
Looking ahead, the sophomore plans to turn her passion for helping others into a career by pursuing a nursing degree after graduation.
"I want to become a nurse because I have a passion for wanting to help people who need it most," Secondine said. "I want to make a difference in people’s lives. I want to be someone that can bring comfort to those who are going through difficult times."
Though she still has two more years left in a Lady Hornets uniform, Secondine already has clear advice for the next generation of Copan athletes working their way through the youth programs.
"Never give up on yourself," Secondine said. "Softball is never gonna be easy, and never be afraid to make mistakes. Last of all, always remember to have fun playing the game."
