BARTLESVILLE AREA SPORTS REPORT

No. 10 Dewey and No. 7 Stigler meet Friday at 1 p.m. for a winner-take-all game with a trip to the Class 3A state baseball tournament on the line. The showdown comes after the Bulldoggers bounced back for a 3-1 win in Thursday night's area doubleheader

Dewey's Levi Wilson locked things down on the mound in that second game, earning the win in relief with a six-inning, scoreless outing. He allowed just six hits with no earned runs, striking out two and walking two, while also drawing a walk of his own at the plate.

The game remained tied 1-1 through four innings until Dewey took control in the bottom of the fifth. Easton Davis ignited the rally with a ground-ball single and a steal of second, finishing the game 1-for-2 with a run scored. Nate Sloan followed with a line-drive single to move Davis to third before stealing second himself; Sloan ended the day 2-for-3 with two runs. With two outs, Davis crossed the plate on a Layne Gastel grounder for the go-ahead run, giving Gastel an RBI. Jackson Fox then capped the scoring with a hard RBI single to third to bring home Sloan, finishing 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Stigler took the opening game of the doubleheader 6-4, primarily on the strength of a four-run first inning. Dewey managed to chip away at the lead with runs in the second and third innings, but they still trailed 6-3 heading into the final frame. The Bulldoggers mounted a late comeback attempt in the seventh, scoring one run to pull within two, but were unable to find the additional offense needed to complete the rally.

Jay Murgia helped lead the effort, finishing 1-for-4 with a run batted in while crossing the plate twice himself. Sloan continued his productive day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a run and two RBIs to account for much of the Dewey scoring.

The Bulldoggers are coached by Riley Allen.

Dewey High School’s Mason Snellgrove makes a play at first base during the Bulldoggers’ regional last week. Dewey takes on Stigler Friday at 1 p.m. for a chance to go to the Class 3A state championship.
