Pressure and heat both took their toll Monday on the Bartlesville High School boys golf team.

But head coach Carl Holmes hopes for a strong comeback Tuesday at the Class 6A boys state tournament being hosted by Forest Ridge in Broken Arrow.

At the end of Monday’s 36-hole grinder the young Bruins — whose fivesome consists of a sophomore and three freshmen — landed in 10th place out of 13 teams.

“We claw back into the top eight,” Holmes said about Tuesday’s quest.

In order to do that, each of the individual Bruin linksters will look to improve on the first-day scores. Team leader Jay Wasemiller shot 78-76 to come in at 154 and sit in 19th place. Holmes is pulling for Wasemiller to piece together a big round Tuesday  — an 18-hole competition — and jump up into the Top 10.

Rounding out Bartlesville’s first-day scores were: Carter Sauer (80-79—159, 37th place), Hutson Coats (80-84—164, 55th), Ethan Phelps (85-86—171, 71st) and Nash Zervas (89-87—176, 75th).

“We didn’t play our best,” said Holmes, who had watched the Bruins shoot 302 and 299 in recent meets. “This was a little different golf course. … We have a team goal and all our kids have individual goals. … Being a young group, you soak it in, learn from it and tell the guys we’re going to be here again next year and now you know what to expect.”

The sizzling temperature also took its toll.

“We went through water like you wouldn’t believe,” said Holmes. “Toward the end of the second round those boys were dragging. The golf course was tough and then it heated up in the afternoon. It was warmer than we have played in a couple of years.”

Even the coaches felt the scorching conditions and had to wipe sweat off their arms, Holmes added.

If all goes well today, the Bruins will shoot closer to their potential and gain some momentum heading into the offseason. Either way, Bartlesville’s presence at the meet is special — this might be just its second appearance in state as a team in the past 20-plus years.
