BARTLESVILLE AREA SPORTS REPORT

Following are reports of Bartlesville High School golf action this week.

BOYS GOLF

OWASSO TOURNAMENT - Despite a late major adjustment, the Bruin linksters sizzled to their best round of the season — perhaps in a decade.

With all five varsity golfers breaking 80, Bartlesville conquered the Bailey Ranch (Owasso) links with 299 — good enough for second place as a team.

“Today was what high school golf should be about,” Bartlesville head coach Carl Holmes said. “A short road trip, 18 holes of golf and 80 degrees of perfect weather.”

Holmes’ Bruin players played as smooth as chilled chocolate milk on a blistering summer day.

Sophomore Jay Wasemiller scorched the course with a one-under par 71 to spearhead the assault, followed by junior Lucas Wyatt with 73.

The two veterans finished third and fifth place, respectively, in the medals.

Rounding out the Bruin fivesome were Hudson Coats, 77; Ethan Phelps, 78; and Carter Sauer, 79.

In addition, senior Nash Zervas competed as an unattached individual and pieced together an impressive 78.

The name that did not appear on the Bruin roster was freshman Damien Walker, who had been swinging a hot club the first two weeks of the season.

A hand injury — which will require surgery, Holmes noted — will keep Walker sidelined from school competition.

Holmes didn’t learn until mid-week he would be without Walker. He promoted Phelps to the varsity with just one day’s notice.

Phelps answered with a phantastic effort.

The bright spot in the last minute shake-up is Bartlesville proved it can possess the quality depth to compete at a high level, Holmes indicated.

One of Thursday’s most notable heroes was Wyatt, who opened the curtain on his potential.

“He’s a great player and a great ball striker,” Holmes said. “He’s a junior that works hard and plays a lot of golf. … He finally put a round together that shows what he’s capable of.”

Thursday’s formidable performance had a double significance — Bailey Ranch also will be the site in a few weeks of the regional tournament and state qualifier.

The Bruins varsity will be off next week. Coming up after that, the Bruins will compete in the state preview at Forest Ridge.

JENKS TOURNAMENT - Paced by sophomore Jay Wasemiller with 74, the Bruins scrapped to 10th place, with a very respectable score of 318, at this week’s Jenks Invitational, hosted by the pro-quality Cedar Ridge golf course.

Wasemiller captured the sixth-place medal.

Rounding out the Bruins’ five-man team were Damien Walker, 79 (30th overall); Carter Sauer, 82; Lucas Wyatt, 83; and Hudson Coats, 84.

Bruin head coach Carl Holmes also entered two individual participants, Ethan Phelps (85) and Nash Zervas (86).

The weather “was absolutely gorgeous,” said Holmes. “It started at 10 a.m. and it turned out to be a gorgeous day with minimal wind. The kids laid out well.”

Wasemiller, the highest placing freshman and a top-10 finisher in last year’s state tournament, continues to shine in the long-to-mid game.

“He hits a lot of greens,” Holmes said. “From tee to the green is his strength. He had some quality ups and downs in the tournament. His ball striking is phenomenal. … He’s right there. When he finally gets that putter hot, watch out.”

GIRLS GOLF

With a tournament championship and a third-place finish already under their belts, the Lady Bruins are raising a ruckus of success.

Bartlesville recently rose to the top of the field at the Sapulpa Tournament, held at the Rock Creek Golf Course. The squad also came in third at the Skiatook Tournament, hosted by the Heritage Hills links.

Vivian Symes is playing the one bag and shooting from the high 80s to the low 90s.

The team’s other top four linksters according to head coach Andy Thurman include Eve Vaclaw (the only senior), Abby Kennedy and Kirstyn Gettings

Thurman said he’s most encouraged by his team’s “continual growth. We started off rough in Stillwater the first week in March. … But the girls have stuck in it and bought in and are continuing to get better every tournament.”

Next up, the Lady Bruins travel to Pryor Creek on April 17, play April 21 at the Owasso Golf & Athletic Club and compete in the regional on April 23 at Bailey Ranch.
