BARTLESVILLE AREA SPORTS REPORT
Following are summaries of some of the area high school action last week.
———
GIRLS: Caney Valley
Harper Watts brought high-voltage offense with 20 points to help the Lady Trojans win the girls’ championship at the Copan Tournament and also to remain perfect (6-0).
Presley Smith added 15 points as Caney Valley knocked off a very good Wesleyan Christian School girls team, 67-30, in Saturday’s final.
“Our defense was pretty intense the whole night,” Caney Valley head coach Deric Longan said. “This was one of those games where we had to pressure them. They were so much taller than we are, but we are much quicker.”
The strategy was to not allow Wesleyan Christian to settle into its half-court game and take advantage of its height advantage, Longan explained.
Defense set the tone for Caney Valley’s buzzsaw through its tourney competition.
The Lady Trojans opened up by almost doubling the Verdigris junior varsity, 61-32. Next up, Caney Valley scooted past Cedar Vale/Dexter (Kan.), 68-32.
That set them up against Wesleyan Christian — with the first-place trophy on the line.
Wesleyan Christian’s path to the final also had been ultra-impressive — an 81-39 dismantling of Prue and a 55-25 cruncher of South Coffeyville.
Caney Valley burst out to a 16-9 first quarter lead on Wesleyan Christian and pulled out to a 29-12 lead by halftime. The Lady Trojans also dominated the second half, 38-18.
The final buzzer saw Caney Valley still unbeaten.
Watts and Smith both made the Copan All-Tournament team, with Smith being named as the MVP.
In addition to Watts and Smith other Lady Trojan scorers included Abby Daigle, nine; Sydni Brown, eight; Adesta Henry, eight; Khloe Crawford, five; and Faith Davis, 3.
“Offensively, we executed as well as we’ve executed all season,” Longan said. “We’re making strides.”
The Lady Trojan offense fed off the defensive hustle.
“Our defense has been improving, it seems like every game,” said Longan, whose Lady Trojans are allowing just 30.5 points per game.
Caney Valley will host Oklahoma Union for Friday’s Homecoming game.

BOYS: Caney Valley
The Caney Valley Trojans didn’t just make a statement at the Copan Tournament.
They made a roar.
Shutting down all three opponents to less than 40 points, the Trojans rolled to the championship with a thunderous 51-39 win against a very, very good Wesleyan Christian School team.
Trojan veteran Zac Longan won the boys’ MVP award and Preston Gipson also received All-Tourney recognition. But several other Caney Valley players also made their impact felt during the tournament week.
Caney Valley opened up the event by nearly doubling up the Dewey junior varsity, 62-33. In the semifinals, Caney Valley thrust past host Copan, 46-32. That set up Saturday’s championship final against the Wesleyan Christian Mustangs.
Trojan head coach Tug Brinker knew exactly what his team had to do going against a Mustang team that had averaged 69 points scored in its previous three games.
“We were going to take away the three-point shot,” Brinker said about Caney Valley’s strategy. “We made it a point to guard their three-point shooters. … We did a really good job defending the threes. … They hit two threes out of the gate and I felt like after that we controlled the game.”
The Trojans scraped out a modest first quarter lead, 16-11, but then surged to a double-digit bulge at halftime, 36-19.
“I felt we controlled the game,” Brinker said. “We just played good defense. … We did a good job rebounding, but we could have done better. … We made only 14 turnovers against their full-court man. … The guys on the bench came in and did their part.”
Four Trojans scored in the double figures — Longan, 14; Gipson, 13; Speck Gann, 11; and Logan Thompson, 10. C.J. Breese added three points.
Caney Valley will finish off its December schedule with a home showdown on Friday against Oklahoma Union. This also will be Caney Valley’s Homecoming.

BOYS: Dewey
The Bulldoggers (6-1) found the perfect answer to seeing their five-game win streak snapped.
They came back the next day and won.
Paced by three double-digit scorers, Dewey pounded the Adair junior varsity, 65-37, on Saturday, in the third place game of the Adair tournament.
Austin Eastman pumped in 16 points, followed by Zach Renfroe and Jay Murguia with 14 apiece to lead Dewey’s offensive attack.
The Adair jayvee was no pushover. They had already beaten one varsity team in the tourney and looked to take down a Dewey squad coming off a rugged loss to Kellyville, 57-43, in the semifinals.
But Dewey players came out with their hard hats on and blue collar grit in their souls.
“We came out hitting on all cylinders,” Dewey head coach Lance Knight said. “We hit some shots. Everybody got an opportunity. … We shot the ball really well.”
Rounding out Dewey’s scoring sheet were Gage Hawkins, eight; Will Lawrence, four; Tyler Roach, three; Lathe Griggs, two; Tra’ Hicks, two; and Karson Johnson, two.
Renfroe had scored 19 points in the first round win against Gravette (Ark.), 60-55.
Dewey is home twice this week, including Friday’s clash with the Caney Valley (Kan.) Bullpups. Pawhuska comes to town on Tuesday.
