BARTLESVILLE AREA SPORTS REPORT

Following are summaries of last Friday’s area basketball games.

BOYS: Dewey 59, Nowata 40

The Dewey express keeps surging along.

Paced by Kooper Crawford and Tra Hicks with 18 and 17 points, respectively, Dewey (17-2) grabbed its seventh-straight win and improved to 9-1 since Christmas.

The Doggers also scored more than 50 points for the 15th time.

Rounding out their top scorers against Nowata were Zach Renfroe, 10; Austin Eastman, six; Gage Hawkins, three; Karson Johnson, three; and Will Lawrence, two.

Crawford also pulled down 15 rebounds, followed by Renfroe and Hicks with approximately six each.

“There was a good crowd on both sides,” Dewey head coach Lance Knight said about the Homecoming showdown in Dewey. “I think that was because this is kind of a rivalry game and a conference game. … I give credit to Nowata. I thought they came out swinging.”

Nowata’s scoring line include Clint Harrington, 15; Caleb Woolman, seven; Ty Williams, seven; Brett Malone, five; Talon Thompson, two; Brayson Richards, two; and Kason Summers, two.

GIRLS: Caney Valley 54, Chelsea 26

Caney Valley (16-2) painted the exclamation point on this one in the fourth quarter, pulling away with 22 points.

Up until Chelsea had stayed within five possessions, more or less.

Harper Watts produced a high-voltage offensive effort with 18 points, followed by Presley Smith with 11 and Sydni Brown with 10. Khloe Crawford and Abby Daigle added nine and six points, respectively.

Brown drew a start with Adesta Henry out due to illness, CV head coach Deric Longan said.

“Sydni did a good job coming in,” he said. “The other girls coming off the bench I felt really performed well.”

Caney Valley is riding a five-game winning streak.

BOYS: Caney Valley 45, Chelsea 35

Make that three in a row for the feisty CV Trojans (13-5).

Despite scoring their season low in points they clamped down on visiting Chelsea in a Friday showdown.

Ball protection also played a major role — the Trojans made just five turnovers.

“It was a very odd game,” said Caney Valley head coach Tug Brinker. “I’ve never seen a team that had that few turnovers.”

Logan Thompson and Zac Longan poured in 16 points to provide the lion’s share of Caney Valley’s scoring.

“We missed a lot of shots we normally hit,” said Brinker. “We played pretty good defense. … Logan Thompson and Preston Gipson rebounded the ball well.”

Chelsea clung closer most of the game than cold to an ice cube.

But a 10-0 run by Caney Valley in the fourth quarter provided the wedge of victory.

GIRLS: Dewey 57, Nowata 24

“Our girls played hard,” said Dewey head coach Michael Sanders, who saw his team improve to 13-7 and 9-2 in its last 11 games.

“We played hard and we played focused,” he continued. “We played really good defense and were able to turn over Nowata for a few easy buckets. It was a good night.”

C.J. Jones poured in 17 points to lead Dewey, followed by Cassie Snead with 10 and Adrianna Hicks 7.

Jaylin Smith was named the Homecoming Queen.

Sanders said the focus is now getting revved up for the playoffs.

“I’d like to see our offense get back to where it was midseason,” he said. “After the playoff seedings come out, that will give us an opportunity (in the remaining regular season games and practices) to clean things up, get little things fixed up and get ready to go.”

The WCS Mustangs (15-5) took a major step toward their third-straight 20-win season.

Owen Hay accumulated 12 points, followed by Draevyn Carter with 11 and Hank Siemers and Carter Kennard with eight apiece.

“I thought our defensive pressure was great throughout the game,” WCS head coach Steven Cooks said. “We were consistently penetrating their zone and getting the ball in the paint. We had really good intensity the whole time.”

Cooks also praised the progress of Copan (7-6).

“They’re also headed in the right direction,” he said. “They have a middle school boys team that is really, really good. I think both programs are moving in the right direction.”

The Mustangs wrapped up January with a 9-3 record and two of their losses by a margin of only four points.

In a recent win against South Coffeyville, she came off the bench to hold its leading scorer to zero points in the fourth quarter.

Against Claremore Christian, she again popped off the pine to play a pivotal role, getting three steals and three rebounds and fueling the defense, Barnsdall coach Gary Askew said.
