_____

Boys: Barnsdall 50, Copan 40

Copan's senior night and final home game didn't end as Hornets' fans wished, but head coach Kolton Stacy was proud of his three seniors during their 10-point loss Thursday to Barnsdall, 50-40.

Senior Shooter Brewington poured in 17 points to lead all scorers. Senior Teegon Caron and junior Zane Stricklin both put up seven each, followed by freshman Peytan Call with five.

"I'm proud of our seniors (including Gabe Huffman),” Stacy said. "They've given a lot to this program and have laid a firm foundation for our future."

Copan (9-8) was down 14 at halftime, 32-18, and was able to cut the lead to five after keeping Barnsdall to just six points in the third quarter, but shooting from the line continues to plague the Hornets, Stacy said.

"Our free throw shooting has been south an awful lot... around 27 to 35 percent for the last two weeks," Stacy said. "If they clean that up we're looking at a completely different outcome in several games."

High scorers for Barnsdall (14-10) were Chance Jackson (14), Bladen Cormack (12) and Byce Byers (9). In their last meeting, the Panthers defeated Copan 49-32.

In Copan's overtime win at Shidler on Tuesday, Call improvised on a broken play to win the game in overtime with a two-pointer about a foot off the free-throw line.

"Hard work and dedication will always find a way to show up in this sport, and (Call) spends a ton of time in the gym working on his game," Stacy said.

Next up, Copan travels to Bluejacket on Monday, while Barnsdall travels to Foyil. Districts for Copan (B1) begin Feb. 12.

_____

Girls: Barnsdall 50, Copan 35

Despite playing hurt, lone senior Zoey Secondin played her final game on Copan's court Thursday in the Hornets' 15-point loss to Barnsdall (14-10), 50-35.

This was a marked improvement for Copan (5-11), which fell to Barnsdall on Feb. 2, 78-28.

"Zoey contributed to the flow of the game more than the stats can show," coach Kirsten Ergenbright said. "But playing hurt, she couldn’t put up the points, but did lead in assists."

Copan struggled in the first quarter with only two points and never truly recovered. The Hornets scored 11 points in the second quarter, going into the locker room with Barnsdall on top 29-13.

"They kept their heads up and pushed hard," Ergenbright said. "We are a young team and make a lot of young mistakes, but this was our last home game, and they left it all on the floor."

Leading the Hornets in scoring was Jacklynn Thompson with 17, followed by Macee Secondine with 12. Barnsdall leaders included Nellie Holcomb (15), Lyndsi Hicks (9), and Rylee Roach (8)

Next up, Copan travels to Bluejacket on Monday, while Barnsdall travels to Foyil. Districts for Copan (B1) begin Feb. 12.
