Following is a roundup of Caney Valley, Dewey, and Pawhuska basketball games.

Nearly 70 years ago, up-and-coming tune-blaster Elvis Presley rattled the troposphere with his booming, warbling rendition of

“Heartbreak Hotel.”

Last weekend, another Presley — last name Smith — sent the Dewey High School team to the end of Lonely Street for a brief, sad sojourn.

Meanwhile, Smith and her Caney Valley High teammates remained unbeaten (3-0) following the 55-54 win to spoil Dewey’s home opener.

Smith — a transfer from Dewey — smoked the nets for 21 points. With six seconds remaining, she buried two clutch free throws to elevate Caney Valley to victory.

Harper Watts scored 14 and Adesta Henry added 11 to round out Dewey’s top three scorers.

Cassie Sneed and C.J. Jones canned 21 and 15 points, respectively, to top Dewey’s scoring sheet.

“Cassie Sneed went on a tear in the fourth quarter,” said Caney Valley head coach Deric Longan. “She was almost unstoppable.”

Jones added a clutch putback late for the Lady Doggers, Longan said.

After Dewey owned the lead, 54-53, Caney Valley set up an inbounds play to get the ball in Smith’s hands. The plan worked. Smith deposited the charity tosses to flip-flop the lead. Dewey got off one last shot at the buzzer. But the fates were not on Dewey's side this night. It was a shame that either of the teams had to lose.

“The play was so fast and it was such an up tempo game,” Longan said. “This was a game of many runs back and forth. … The fourth quarter probably took a half-hour. The atmosphere was incredible.”

In addition to Smith, Khole Crawford and Roxy Hawkins also downed key free throws for Caney Valley during crunch time.

Gage Hawkins skinned the nets for 15 points — on five three-pointers — and Zach Renfroe also scored in double digits to stretch Dewey’s perfect record to 4-0.

Pawhuska hi-jacked the lead at halftime, but Dewey burst back in the final two quarters.

Dewey finally claimed the lead for good in the final minute — and Jay Murguia sealed the win with two free throws in the final seconds, his only points of the game.

“We didn’t really shoot the ball well. … But we played great defense. This was our fourth game in a row to hold a team under 50 points.

Dewey finished off last week with a victorious home opener.

Renfroe racked up 15 points to lead the Dewey scoring, followed by Austin Eastman with 13, Murguia with seven, Lathe Griggs with five and Carter Sears, Hawkins and Will Lawrence with two points each.

“Zach Renfroe has stepped up at point guard in all four games,” Knight said.

Dewey has been battling valiantly without the services of injury Kooper Crawford, Knight said. He said he hopes Crawford will be ready to get back on the court within the next few games.

“My kids are stepping up,” Knight said, praising the hustle and hard work of Tra Knight all over the court.

Dewey will wrap up this week in the Adair tourney.

GIRLS: Pawhuska 61, Dewey 54

The Pawhuska Lady Huskies (3-1) defeated Dewey at home on Monday. The Lady Bulldoggers, coached by Michael Sanders, are 2-2 on the young season, while first-year coach David Lampton coaches the Lady Huskies. Lampton, who is no stranger to the basketball court, led the Oklahoma Union Lady Cougars to a state championship in 1997.
