BARTLESVILLE AREA SPORTS REPORT

A trio of homers and a heck-of-a relief pitching stint by Brooke Eckert amped up Dewey High School’s voltage in one of its most electrifying wins of the season.

Londyn Bond blasted two solo homers — including the game-winner — to power the Lady Doggers past county rival Bartlesville, 5-2.

“We want to beat Bartlesville,” explained Dewey head coach Riley Allen about the rivalry intensity of this game, adding it felt just short of a playoff game.

In fact, Dewey (27-7) is on the doorstep of the Class 3A regionals and a chance to advance to the state tournament.

Dewey will host the Thursday regional. Beggs will play Valiant in the first game (1:30 p.m.). Dewey will take on the winner at 3:30 p.m.

Tuesday’s showdown at Bartlesville gave Dewey a final chance to sharpen its attack prior to the regional.

“He (Bartlesville coach Kyle Minton) also needed a game for the 30th,” explained Allen. “That was pretty much it. It was a good thing for us to play them. I was very excited to play them. They’re a good test for us. He does a good job.”

Allen called on ace pitcher Kayla Overton to start out against Bartlesville and then brought in Eckert for the final 3.1 innings. Chanley Herren was their catcher.

“We had Kayla on a pitch count,” due to keeping her fresh for Thursday’s regional tourney.

Overton pitched into the fourth inning and then faced some adversity against a very strong offensive Bartlesville team. She carried a 2-0 lead into the fourth inning and recorded two outs — but then gave up two walks and a single and two runs to tie the score, 2-2.

That’s when Allen decided to make the switch to Eckert. She recorded the final 10 outs without giving up a run.

“I’m very, very proud of Brooke Eckert,” Allen said. “She doesn’t get much of a chance to pitch because of Kayla, but every time she gets in she gives us a chance to win.”

While Overton and Eckert — and the defense — kept Bartlesville’s offense mostly bottled up, the offense did its part, thanks especially to the huge bats of Bond and Overton.

After the score was tied, 2-2, Bond belted her second solo homer of the game and put Dewey ahead (for good), 3-2.

In the sixth inning, Herren scored on a squeeze bunt, and Overton drove in another run. Earlier in the game, Overton also blasted a solo dinger.

Coming off an ultra-successful regular season, Allen said the key to making a strong playoff run is not to be intimidated by the pressure of the moment.

“We’ve got some good seniors, but we’re still a relatively young team,” he explained. “We need to keep our heads on straight. We need to have a mature mentality. … I’m very proud of these girls. … I appreciate the heck out of them and how they listen and want to get better.”

Bartlesville (23-11) is also in the midst of an amazing season. They had been on an eight-game winning streak prior to Tuesday's loss.

Next up, they travel Thursday to Pryor and will then host Pryor next Monday.

Bartlesville High School’s Maddie Nachbor (9) awaits a throw to home as Dewey’s Kadynce Lavasseur (8) scores a run. The Lady Bulldoggers defeated Bartlesville 5-2.
