BARTLESVILLE AREA SPORTS REPORT

Former Copan High School football standouts Teegan Caron and Bryson Kalivoda took the field one final time, representing the Gold squad in a narrow 40-38 loss to the Green team during the 52nd annual Oklahoma Eight-Man All-Star Game at NEO A&M College on June 20.

The game featured 80 of the state’s top senior eight-man athletes, with the Gold squad representing the East side of the state against the West's Green team. Copan head coach Trenton Kallenberger called the offense for his two players, guiding the Gold squad to touchdowns on every single drive that the two Hornet athletes were on the field.

Shooter Brewington was also selected to play in the game, while Weston O’Rourke opted out.

Kallenberger recalled how the late Mike Tupa, former Bartlesville Examiner-Enterprise sportswriter and co-founder of Bartlesville Area Sports, dubbed Brewington, Caron, Kalivoda, and O’Rourke as “The Four Hornetsmen.” The nickname served as an ode to the Hornet mascot and celebrated a core group that played together since their freshman year.

“We knew this group was pretty special,” Kallenberger said. “And I’m very humbled to see our seniors selected as top players for our district amongst the top players throughout the state.”

Several Copan players recently received postseason honors:

Looking ahead to the upcoming season, Kallenberger noted that roster numbers for the program are looking impressive. Twenty-two players suited up for early workouts, and 21 athletes traveled to Shattuck for team camp.

“Our numbers are the best we’ve had since 2020,” Kallenberger said. “In Shattuck, we competed well against some traditionally talented programs from out west.”

Kallenberger expects the roster to grow to 25 players with the addition of a large freshman class and incoming transfer students.

Last season, the Hornets finished 8-2 in the regular season and hosted a first-round playoff game against Coyle.

Copan transitions into Class B-II District 3 this fall, setting up fresh district matchups against Welch, Cave Springs, Depew, Pond Creek-Hunter, and Wesleyan Christian School.

Copan High School freshman Payten Call (2), left, and former Hornet Shooter Brewington (20) compete in game action in this file photo. Call was named a first-team All-District B-II-4 defensive back, while Brewington was selected as the district's defensive player of the year.
