CLUB HISTORY

As mentioned, 2026 marks the 60th year of the BGC’s existence.

It began as an outgrowth of Bartlesville hosting the 1966 AAU Gymnastic Championship national tournament, which was televised on ABC’s Wide World of Sports.

Then-Phillips 66 Director of Athletics Ken Treadway was instrumental in bringing the AAU Championships to town.

The left-over equipment after the event and the new enthusiasm locally for gymnastics led to the creation of the Phillips 66 Gymnastics Club, which initially trained and developed both boys and girls for competitions. It now features just girls competitive teams, although its recreation classes and training are for both boys and girls.

The club has a long tradition of attracting participants from throughout Green Country and into southern Kansas.

Due to its Phillips 66 roots, the BGC is among the longest-running organizations of its type in the United States and its annual fall tournament extends back further than any similar event.

During the past 60 years, several former BGC athletes have gone on to excel in college and international competition.

ELVIS IN THE HOUSE?

The 1960s will come alive again during Valentine’s Day Week in what the BGC hopes will be a community block party of nostalgia.

Everyone is invited to enjoy the club’s annual Rock Star Meet, held in the Adam’s Gym, on February 13-17.

Gymnasts from throughout the region or nation will compete in the event, which brings needed economic impact to the Bartlesville area, including hotels, restaurants and shops.

There will be both AAU and USA Gymnastics competitions.

Some of the related activities will include a 50/50 drawing ($5 per ticket or four five tickets for $20), hair feathers and hair tinsel ($5), flowers ($3) and gymnast shout-outs for $5.

Concessions also will be available.

Admission to the AAU sessions will be $5 per adult and to the USA sessions will be $15 per adult and $10 for children 5-to-11 years.
