BARTLESVILLE AREA SPORTS REPORT

(Editor’s note: While we kicked off this feature last week as our Student-Athlete of the Week with Bartlesville senior Wyatt Mathis, we quickly realized that a single weekly slot simply isn't enough to capture the vast amount of talent across our 12 area schools. Moving forward, this series is expanding into our Area Game Changers showcase. This change allows us to highlight multiple standout competitors in every edition who change the dynamic of their teams through leadership, effort and heart. Our next featured standout is Dewey senior Marshal McDaniel.)

Dewey High School senior Marshal McDaniel knows exactly how fast the high school athletic experience moves. As a multi-sport competitor for the Bulldoggers, McDaniel anchors the football team as a wide receiver and outside linebacker, while also competing on the basketball court and the golf course.

That broad athletic background has given him a unique perspective on leadership, discipline and the value of every single moment under the Friday night lights.

When looking back at his favorite moments on the gridiron, McDaniel points to a massive seven-reception, 120-yard performance against Vinita this season, which earned him receiving player of the game honors and included a crucial touchdown. Yet, his favorite memories stretch all the way back to his freshman year, when the Bulldoggers defeated rival Nowata in the final Adam Hooper Trophy game.

For McDaniel, the electric atmosphere of small-town Oklahoma football is best captured right before kickoff. His favorite tradition is running out of the tunnel with his teammates, feeling the energy as the home crowd gets hyped up for the game.

On the field, McDaniel models his approach after Ken Zachary, a player he admires for his leadership, athleticism and the way he teaches everyone around him about true discipline. That discipline translates directly into McDaniel's view on high school sports as a whole. He credits athletics with helping him grow as a person, noting that his coaches have been great role models who help him become a better man.

As he looks toward life after graduation, McDaniel keeps his long-term goals focused on the foundational things that matter most: building a beautiful family and securing a good job.

With his senior year well underway, McDaniel has a clear message for the younger athletes coming up behind him in the Dewey program.

"Don't take school or athletics for granted," McDaniel said, "because it all flies by in the blink of an eye."
