BARTLESVILLE AREA SPORTS REPORT
Bartlesville area high school girls basketball fans will see a familiar figure — and hear his familiar voice — on the sidelines this coming season.
For more than approximately 30 seasons David Lampton established himself as one of the mainstays of area hoops while building a powerful Oklahoma Union High School girls’ program. During his tenure, the Lady Cougars captured a state title (1996-97) and made several state tournament appearances.
But in 2023 Lampton resigned his position, due to a change in his daily schedule requirements with the school.
He landed at Fairland High School, where he coached the past few seasons.
Lampton is now back in the area as the new Pawhuska High School girls basketball head coach, an opportunity he accepted last spring.
He couldn’t be happier.
“When I went in there, everybody just made me feel real comfortable,” Lampton said. “Everybody’s nice.”
He inherits a Lady Huskie program — formerly coached by David Cash — that has been among the state’s most successful the past five seasons, with a 101-30 record and an appearance in the state semifinals (2022-23).
Madison Reynolds (5-8) will provide senior leadership on a team that relies heavily on underclassmen.
Reynolds “did really, really well,” during summer ball earlier this summer, Lampton added: “Our kids all showed up … and we had a good summer league.”
Three veteran sophomores should also make a major impact — Brooklyn Miles, Emillie Curry and Audrianna Miles.
With so much young talent moving through the program, the prospects for this season are exciting and beyond that even brighter.
When the Pawhuska job came open, Lampton felt it might be the right fit for him. He’s been acquainted for 15 years with Pawhuska Principal Bron Williams.
Lampton also feels an affinity to the Pawhuska community, which he compared to the friendly atmosphere in the Oklahoma Union universe.
“I think all of these people are pretty close,” he said. “It’s a lot like the atmosphere at Oklahoma Union. These are down-to-earth good people. … It’s exciting. If we stay healthy we’re going to be really, really good. … It’s great being back in the Bartlesville area. I’m very, very excited to be at Pawhuska.”
His emphasis will be on man defense, “like we played at Oklahoma Union all those years. We’re going to guard people. These are smart kids and athletic kids.”
