BARTLESVILLE AREA SPORTS REPORT

During his nearly 30 years of covering area high school sports for either the Bartlesville Examiner-Enterprise or the Bartlesville Area Sports Report, Mike Tupa has enjoyed the opportunity to observe some incredible athletes.

This is an ongoing series highlighting, each few days, one of those athletes from the 1996-97 school year through the present. The list is not in chronological order. The athletes are presented in random sequence.

Today's Spotlight

TREY CLOUD (Wesleyan Christian)

Multiple sports (Class of 2009)

Many football teams still hang their hats on the time-tested axiom “three yards and a cloud of dust.”

But, a little more than 15 years ago, Wesleyan Christian’s motto could have been “four years and a Cloud of thrust.”

Standing approximately 6-foot-4, or taller, lean, muscular and the filed sharpness of an arrowhead, Cloud helped launch the WCS Mustang varsity football program into a successful flight in its early stages.

Of course he didn’t do it alone — running back Zeb White was a flinty phenom who flowed through run defenses like a gust through corn stalks and other players of that group such as Jason Archambo, Adam Fratzke and others, proved to be major components in those heady days of the team’s development, engineered by head coach Curt Cloud and his staff.

But from the tip of his toe to his intelligent noggin, Trey Cloud proved to be a catalyst as well as a primary piece in the pristine progress of Mustang sports.

He would go on to suit up in college for Southern Nazarene University, where he set the school record (still standing) of the most successful extra point kicks (nine) in a game, and be named to All-Academic teams in multiple years.

Following college, Cloud became head coach for the prestigious Southwest Covenant High School football team and spent nearly a decade helping it become one of the most respected eight-man teams in the state.

In 2018, he navigated Southwest Covenant to a 14-1 record and the state runner-up spot in Class C.

Although WCS never advanced that far during Cloud’s playing days, the Mustangs did reach the Christian Association state semifinals.

For a sports program in its infancy, the Mustangs grabbed some gritty glory.

In 2007, during Cloud’s junior season, the Mustangs lost to Southwest Covenant — of all teams — in the playoffs. Cloud passed for 1,017 yards that year in a Mustang offense that relied heavily on the run game.

A year later, the Mustangs faced overwhelming underdog odds going up against Covington-Douglas on its home field. The fact Covington-Douglas failed to get a mercy rule — it won, 57-27 — was a major moral victory for WCS.

In Cloud’s sophomore campaign (2006), the Mustangs improved to 2-1 with a 48-32 win against Bluejacket. He threw for 74 yards, two touchdowns and two two-point conversions.

That same season, the Mustangs hosted their first-ever game on the John White Memorial Field in Bartlesville. They hammered Southwest Christian, 34-0, including a TD toss from Cloud to Archambo.

In a loss that year to White Oak, Cloud garnered 121 passing yards with two touchdowns and ran for 34 more.

The Mustangs also beat Summit Christian, 72-26, that year to improve to 4-3. Cloud accounted for six touchdowns — four on the ground and two on passes for Jeremy Betterton and Jesse Betterton.

Summit had led at halftime, 20-6, before WCS put on its monstrous rally in the second half.

During his senior season (2008), Cloud flung the ‘skin for 1,863 yards — on 104-of-194 completions — and 10 touchdowns. He also ran for four scores.

Cloud would be selected to play in the eight-man football All-State game and White would be listed as an alternate.

Cloud also started for the WCS  basketball team.

In the 2008-09 season, he scored 11 points in the third quarter to help energize WCS to a 76-49 win against Liberty Academy. WCS outscored their opponent, 29-6, in the third period.

Cloud’s offensive rebound and putback helped extend a 14-0 run and he ended with 17 points. He also scored 18 points in a win against Claremore Christian.

In his final basketball game — a 77-66 loss to Mulhall-Orlando — Cloud scored eight points during a 24-point first quarter. He also recorded 16 rebounds (eight offensive) and five assists for the game.

Cloud excelled in the classroom, as well, being named in multiple years as the WSC Student of the Year.

He visited Southern Nazarene University for a basketball visit, but ended up playing football.

Due to a lineup tweak, Cloud inadvertently became the place kicker for at least part of his redshirt sophomore year and nailed 14-of-14 extra points, including nine in one game.

That same season he played backup quarterback and threw for 96 yards.

Cloud also accomplished a rare feat by passing for a score and kicking the extra point afterward.

He belongs among the top area athletes.
