BARTLESVILLE AREA SPORTS REPORT

During his nearly 30 years of covering area high school sports for either the Bartlesville Examiner-Enterprise or the Bartlesville Area Sports Report, Mike Tupa has enjoyed the opportunity to observe some incredible athletes.

This is an ongoing series highlighting, each few days, one of those athletes from the 1996-97 school year through the present. The list is not in chronological order. The athletes are presented in random sequence.

Today's Spotlight

CASEY STRATE (Dewey)

CLINT STRATE (Dewey)

Multiple sports (Class of 2010)

Talk about packing a one-two punch!

The Strate twins remain part of Dewey’s most valuable athletic treasures.

Their individual skills and achievements are legendary.

Their membership and leadership among an exclusive club of incredibly talented Dewey athletes of those years is extraordinary.

They were literally athletes for all seasons — football in the fall, basketball in winter, high school baseball in the spring and more baseball in the summer.

Their presence and abilities lifted the entire Dewey sports program — especially in football.

During their senior year (2009-10) — with Clint engineering the offense at quarterback and Casey as his favorite receiver  — with Casey also as one of the top defensive backs in the nation (yes, nation) — Dewey rolled to its first playoff spot in 15 years and all the way to the Class 3A semifinals.

From their sophomore through their senior seasons, Dewey hammered out an 18-12 regular season record and won two playoff games.

During his senior year, Casey ranked among the national high school leaders in interceptions and finished with 12. He intercepted at least one pass in each of Dewey’s first seven games.

Clint earned the starting quarterback spot his sophomore season — but injury kept him sidelined his junior campaign (2008-09). He came back in 2008 to lead Dewey to its first playoff game since 1994.

In 2009, Dewey muscled to a 6-4 regular season record and zapped two strongly favored teams in the playoffs, Metro Christian, 28-21, and Clinton, 19-14.

During the 2009 football season — guided by long-term Dewey head coach Chris Revard — Strate intercepted a red zone pass and returned it to the Dewey 44. Dewey went on to beat Victory Christian, 62-7, to improve to 5-2.

In the same game, Clint scored four rushing touchdowns, including a 56-yarder, and Casey sprinted 20 yards for another score.

Dewey also crushed Blackwell, 51-0, highlighted by three touchdown passes by Clint — one each to Bryan Johnson, Stephen Eastham and Casey.

Clint finished with seven completions for 119 yards and no interceptions.

Dewey also blasted Inola, 56-0, energized by Clint’s 82-yard touchdown run. He also scored from 21 yards out and passed to Michael Abell for a 35-yard score. Casey contributed a 67-yard punt return to the house and two interceptions.

Casey turned in one of the area’s great receiving performances of all time — nine catches for 254 yards and two touchdown catches (45, 35) — in the 19-14 playoff stunner against Clinton. On the 45-yard aerial, Casey shook off three defenders and ran 25 yards after the catch to the end zone.

Casey also produced six tackles and a sack.

Clint threw for 259 yards and three scores to secure Dewey’s first playoff win since 1991.

During the 2008 football season, Clint found Casey for a 70-yard touchdown pass in a 24-21 win against Inola. Casey recorded 135 receiving yards.

The twins — especially Casey — also were powers on the hardwood.

In a 42-41 loss to Manfford, Casey flushed 15 points, 11 of them in the first half. Clint added five points.

Casey warmed the nets with 12 points in a 41-34 setback against Vinita.

When spring and summer rolled around, the Strate boys made the diamond shine brighter.

During an 11-5 win against Springfield (Mo.) Hillcrest, during summer ball, Clint went 4-for-4, including a triple, scored four runs and drove in a run.

In the spring of 2010, Clint and Jason Escalante hit back-to-back homers in a hard-fought 15-9 win against Nowata. Clint also tripled and scored on J.R. Dixon’s single. Clint blasted a homer for the game’s final run.

During a 10-7 thriller against Pawhuska, Clint put a ball in play that forced a two-out error and scored two runs.

That same spring, Casey hit a three-run homer and an RBI triple in a 16-4 win against Pawnee. Clint added a single and a double, two runs scored and an RBI.

Around that same time, Casey blasted two homers in a 5-4 loss to Pawhuska.

It’s been more than a decade-and-a-half since the Strates suited up for Dewey and infused the program with their talent, their fire, their smiles, their skill, their joy of competition, their intensity and their can-do attitude.

They remain among the best-ever area athletes.
