BARTLESVILLE AREA SPORTS REPORT
The Doenges Toyota Indians (16-7-2) swept a doubleheader from the Tulsa Barons Black on Wednesday at Rigdon Field in Bill Doenges Memorial Stadium. The twin bill served as a final tune-up game prior to Thursday's start of the 67th annual Glen Winget Memorial Tournament.
The Indians took the opening contest 10-5 before capturing the nightcap 11-2 during the annual KWON Night.
Local fans saw familiar area faces take the field for the visitors, with former Bartlesville Bruin Sam Marcella on the mound and former Oklahoma Union standout Bodee West at shortstop for the Barons in the first game.
The opening game remained a tight, back-and-forth affair through four innings, with the Barons holding a slim 5-4 lead. The Bartlesville bats erupted in the bottom of the sixth frame, plating six runs to break the game open.
Joel Perez reached on an error by the third baseman to open the inning. Coen Miller followed with a hard ground ball single to right field, advancing Perez to third. Zach Hale then drew a walk to load the bases.
Dewey graduate Parker Garrison walked to drive in Perez, tying the game 5-5. The Barons then pulled Marcella from the mound before Henry Calderon hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Miller to give the Indians a 6-5 lead.
Barnsdall product Gavin Wood, a late addition to the Indians roster, lined a single to center field to bring home Hale. Former Dewey Bulldogger Nate Sloan then ripped a line-drive triple, scoring both Garrison and Wood to extend the cushion to 9-5.
Bartlesville added its final run of the frame after Rhett Leu walked and Sloan scored on a balk, pushing the Indians ahead 10-5. The Barons went scoreless in the top of the seventh to end the game.
Kamen Sprague picked up the win for the Indians, pitching one scoreless inning with one strikeout. Former Bartlesville Bruin Sterling Kroh and Copan Hornet Zane Stricklin also saw work on the mound for Bartlesville. Marcella finished with one hit and two RBIs for the Barons in the loss.
During the KWON Night festivities, radio station owners Dorea and Kevin Potter, along with their staff, distributed various prizes to the crowd. Promotions included vacation trips, T-shirts and cash payouts to lucky fans designated to cash in on Indians base hits—including a $15 prize secured by this author thanks to Sloan's crucial sixth-inning triple.
The climate inside the stadium also provided some entertainment for those at the game and listening at home. From the safety of the elevated press box, sports broadcaster Evan Fahrbach announced over the airwaves that there was a "slight wind chill" slicing through the sticky, 90-degree summer air. While that phantom breeze may have comforted the radio crew upstairs, the players, fans and this photojournalist roasting below certainly never felt it.

A six-run third inning propelled the Indians to a 7-2 lead in the nightcap before Bartlesville tacked on four more runs over the next two frames to secure the 11-2 victory.
Former Dewey Bulldogger Easton Davis led the offensive charge, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Sloan finished 1-for-3 and crossed the plate twice, while Leu and Grant Goldman each finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored to fuel the blowout.
On the mound, Bartlesville product Kaden Romesburg earned the victory, allowing just one hit and striking out one. Dewey Bulldoggers Zane Griggs and Lathe Griggs provided dominant performances, with Zane racking up six strikeouts and Lathe striking out five batters.
