A new era of Bartlesville Legion baseball is taking shape as Tony Osborne steps in to lead the program, vowing to protect a local legacy that spans generations.
Osborne, co-founder of the Top Notch Baseball organization, was named manager of the Doenges Toyota Indians in March. He takes over for former manager John Pannell.
“It is a huge honor to be asked to put my hat in and to be selected and voted in,” Osborne said. “Past coaches have led the way and have put nothing but blood, sweat and tears into the program.”
Osborne is joined by a staff that includes assistant manager and pitching coach Lizandro Cruz, Danny Perez, Jesus Rojas and Hector Mañon, who all bring a significant amount of collegiate-level experience from Oklahoma Wesleyan University
“As far as why we chose to take this thing on, it’s simple: It’s a legacy,” Osborne said. “This is something that we could not just see fade away. We want to continue this tradition but also bring a new culture and a new vibe.”
The Indians will again compete in the American Legion and the D-BAT Collegiate League. The game schedule should be similar to last season’s with a strong home presence, Osborne said. He also expects to field the Braves team, so younger players are encouraged to try out.
The Indians roster features a core of returning talent, including Zane Strickland, Bryce Luelf, Jaxon Zaun, Eddie Rice and Lathe Griggs. These players were part of last season’s Glen Winget Memorial Tournament championship.
Osborne confirmed the historic tournament, which began in 1959, will continue over the Fourth of July holiday week.
“Like every year, there’s a huge waiting list and it’s a tradition and legacy we will never let die,” Osborne said.
Tryouts for the Indians and Braves are scheduled for Saturday, May 2, at the Oklahoma Wesleyan University practice field on Silver Lake Road. Pitchers and catchers begin at 9 a.m. Players will be asked to check in via a QR code upon arrival.
The season opener is set for May 30 at Wichita State against the Kansas Curve.
For Osborne, the move from youth baseball to the 19-and-under level is about more than just wins.
“It truly is my passion to coach and guide young men to be great — not just players, but great young men for the future of this area,” he said.
