Following are summaries of Bartlesville High School varsity wrestling matches this season.
(Editor's note: this article may not contain recent matches.)
_____
BOYS: BHS 43, Vinita 27
A four-match winning streak boosted the Bartlesville High wrestling team to a season-opening win against Vinita, 43-27.
After opening with a forfeit loss at 106 and a setback by technical all at 113, the Bruins surged to four-straight wins — three of them by decisions — to overtake the lead, 15-11.
They also won in five in the final seven matches to nail down a significant victory by a rebuilding squad that included nine sophomores in the lineup.
Second-year head coach Bryan Vashus returned only four grapplers with major varsity experience last season — Nick Davis (120), Joshua Vashus (138), Zeke Mieir (157) and Kamden Dainty (190).
The only Bruin senior in the lineup was Kain Garrett (132) — a first-year varsity wrestler. He beat his Vinita opponent, 6-5.
“I was super impressed with Kain,” coach Vashus said.
Even though his team is heavy on varsity inexperience, the wrestlers in the room are committed and dedicated to getting better. Vashus said.
“The majority of them went to camps over the summer and they were meeting regularly throughout the summer,” Vashus said, adding the majority have worked out at the school throughout the school year and some worked out with college wrestlers.
Bartlesville varsity results included:
106: Loss by forfeit.
113: Michael Street, win by forfeit.
120: Nick Davis, loss by tech fall.
126: Jeremiah Russell, win by decision.
132: Kain Garrett, win by decision, 6-5.
138: Joshua Vashus, win by decision, 7-2.

157: Zeke Mieir, win by major decision.

175: Noah Ramirez, win by pin.
190: Kamden Dainty, win by pin
215: Leo Martinez, loss by m.d.
Hwt: Jordin Goss, loss by pin.
Vashus notes: Garrett wrestled just two matches last season. … Joshua Vashus defeated an opponent that had beaten him twice last season. … Martinez’s match was only his third ever.

BOYS: Claremore 64, BHS 9
Claremore exploited the Bruins’ inexperience, which included the second or third-ever match for three in the lineup.
Russell recorded the Bruins’ biggest win — a pin in the 128-pound division.
At 132 pounds, Garrett captured an exciting one-point victory.
“Overall, I think we wrestled as good as we could,” coach Vashus said. “They’re a tough program. We fought hard. Guys that could have gotten pinned didn’t get pinned.
