BARTLESVILLE AREA SPORTS REPORT
Had there been a barn, it would have been in cinders by the time the Bartlesville and Muskogee wrestling meet finished last Wednesday evening.
In a hay burner that went down to the final match, Bartlesville — which is coached by Bryan Vashus — hung on to win, 41-39.
The Bruins dominated from the 120 through 165 weight classes, going 7-1 during that stretch while registering 41 points, including five pins and a forfeit win.
“A lot of things had to go right,” said second-year Bruin head wrestling coach Bryan Vashus. “It was a crazy back and forth match. … It was an intense duel. I was impressed with how much they (Muskogee) improved since last year.”
Muskogee picked up nine points at the very lightest weights and rolled through the upper weights.
Racking up pins on the mat for Bartlesville were Michael Street (120), Joshua Vashus (138), Tag-Hee Crowels (144), Ezekiel Mieir (157) and Cameron McCloud (165).
Christian Ketiku (126) contributed six points with a forfeit victory and Kain Garrett (132) won by a technical fall for five points. Had Garrett won by a simple decision (three points) the final score would have been tied.
“Kain pulled out a really important technical fall,” coach Vashus said.
Another gritting showing that saved the victory for Bartlesville was turned in by Michael Street (113).
Street battled to a loss by a simple decision (13-6) to prevent his opponent from recording any bonus points that might have flipped the score.
“Michael had a tough kid,” said Vashus. “If they would have pinned Michael they would have won the dual.”
Following are Bartlesville’s match-by-match results:
106: Lose by forfeit
113: Michael Street lose by dec., 13-6.
120: Jeremiah Russell
126: Christian Ketiku win by forfeit.
132: Kain Garrett win by tech fall, 24-8.
138: Joshua Vashus win by pin, 1:47.
144: Tag-Hee Crowels win by pin, 1:14.
150: Liam Buchanan lose by fall, 4:18.
157: Ezekiel Mieir win by fall, 1:28.
165: Cameron McCloud win by fall, 4:12.
175: Lose by forfeit.
190: Nicholos Miller lose by fall, 1:47.
215: Leo Martinez lose by fall, 1:42.
285: Jordin Goss lose by fall, 1:50.

SAND SPRINGS TOURNAMENT
Street, Ketiku, Goss and Vashus each battled into the top 12 of their respective weight classes in last weekend’s Bobby Lyons Meet hosted by Sand Springs.
To place in the uppermost dozen in this gauntlet of grittiness was a badge of honor.
“Three (Allen, Texas, Bixby, Broken Arrow) of the nation’s top 35 teams were in this tournament,” noted coach Vashus.
Ketiku (126) powered to a 5-2 record (including two byes) and ninth place. In the ninth-place match he racked up a major decision against a Sperry foe, 17-5.
Street (113) muscled to 10th place with a 4-3 record (including two byes and a forfeit win). He fought hard in the ninth-place match, losing to a Sapulpa rival, 7-0.
Goss (285) was a busy competitor, getting on the mat for six full matches. He came in with a 3-3 record and 11th place. He recorded all three of his wins by fall, including subduing a Sand Springs rival in the 11th place match with a pin at 2:57.
“Jordan Goss had the best tournament of his life,” coach Vashus said. “He’s really improving.”
Vashus (138) also turned in a gritty weekend. In fact he was the only Bruin to scrap through seven matches on the mat. He finished 12th with a 3-4 mark. He recorded his three wins by pin and two major decisions. He absorbed a loss by pin, against a Sapulpa challenger, in the 11th place match.
In tne of his major tourney wins, Vashus overwhelmed an Owasso opponent, 13-1, in a rematch of a regional showdown last season, won by Vashus, 9-7.
Several other Bruins waged valiant efforts in the tourney but didn’t place:
— Jeremiah Russell (120) finished 2-2 after losing two competitive decisions.
— Garrett (132) came in at 2-2, including a major decision victory against a Tahlequah rival, 9-1.
— Crowels (144) recorded a 1-2 record including a 9-6 loss by decision to a Tulsa Union opponent.
— Buchanan (150) opened up with a win by pin (2:30) but lost his next two matches.
— Mieir (157) finished 2-2, including a win by major decision (16-3) against a Vinita foe.
— McCloud (165) fashioned a 2-2 record, including a triumph by fall (2:36) against a Tahlequah challenger.
— Miller (190) finished 2-2 with two byes.
— Martinez (215) came in at 2-2 with two byes.
