All those thousands of free throws in practice paid off in huge dividends Saturday for the Oklahoma Wesleyan University men’s basketball team.

The Eagles poured in 8-of-10 charity tosses in the final five minutes to knock off Bethan (Kan.), 83-81, for a successful launch into the new year.

The Donnie Bostwick-coached Eagles improved to 11-2 for the season and 7-1 in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Tamaje Izuagbe buried 18 points, followed by Ethan Williams with 15 to lead the balanced Eagle scoring sheet.

Jaden Wilson added nine points, followed by Blake Hamblin, Yashi McKenzie and Nathaniel Law with eight apiece.

Hamblin and Williams both pulled down five rebounds and Izuagbe blocked three shots.

Williams dialed in two free throws with 2:39 left to put OWU ahead, 81-78 The Eagles would never trail again.

After Bethany knotted the score, 81-81, Hamblin netted a free throw with 29 seconds left to break the tie, 82-81.

With only one tick showing, Wilson nailed 1-of-2 free throws for the final point.

LADY EAGLES

Bethany edged the Lady Eagles in the women’s game, 64-53.

OKWU’s scoring sheet was as balanced as a monk’s diet.

Khamille Warr and Gracie Alexander each scored 11 points, followed by Kamryn Phoenix with 10 and A. Baker with nine.

Warr also pulled down six rebounds and Taliyah Harris handed out six assists.

In an exhibition during the Christmas break, the Lady Eagles lost by just 11 points, 64-53, to Oral Roberts.

The Lady Eagles are 6-8, 1-7.
