BARTLESVILLE AREA SPORTS REPORT

What a week for Donnie Bostwick and the Oklahoma Wesleyan University men’s basketball team.

The Eagles (14-2) battled through three wins in five days — including a highest-scoring output by a Bostwick-coached Eagles’ squad.

OKWU also rang up two crucial conference victories, continuing their march toward the NAIA national tournament and a chance to play again for a national championship. (The Eagles finished last season as the national runner-up team.)

The Eagles opened their week’s trifecta by spurting past Spurgeon College, 127-106 — the highest single-game point total during Bostwick’s OKWU tenure.

In addition it was the 50th 100-or-more-point-output for a Bostwick-coached OKWU team.

Tamaje Izuagbe filled the nets with 35 points — including 12-of-15 shooting from the field and 11-of-11 from the charity stripe — to pace the Eagles’ offense.

In their other two of the trio, they beat Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference foes Bethany (Kan.), 80-75, and Friends (Kan.), 71-70.

Meanwhile, the OKWU Lady Eagles battled valiantly to a single-digit loss against Friends, 69-61, and finished 0-2 on the week.

Following are additional details for Eagles’ and Lady Eagles’ games last week.

Joining Izuagbe as OKWU’s leading scorers were: Ethan Williams, 17; Yashi McKenzie, 16; Jaden Wilson, 12; and Nathaniel Law, 10.

Cameron Mennsfield and Marshall Gillette each added eight points.

McKenzie also confiscated 10 rebounds to record a double-double.

A total of 13 players scored for OKWU.

Especially notable was OKWU’s perfection at the free throw line — 25-for-25.

OKWU also piled up a whopping 43 points on turnovers and 45 points off the bench.

MEN: OKWU 80, Saint Mary 75

The Eagles held off a spirited second half rally to turn back Saint Mary.

Atop OKWU’s balanced scoring sheet were: Izuagbe, 17; Wilson, 12; Law, 12; and McKenzie, 11.

Some other points’ contributors included Angel Hidalgos, 7; Amari Woods, 6; Daniel Oluwasuyi, 5; and Mennsfield, 4.

OKWU hit a blistering total again from the charity stripe, 23-of-30.

With just 10 seconds left OKWU clung to a one-point lead, 76-75. But McKenzie and Wilson both hit two free throws in the final 10 seconds to secure the win.

Saint Mary had started the second half with a 15-4 run to knot the score, 52-52. But Law’s conventional three-point play with 12:11 left put the Eagles in front for good — although it was mostly trade point-for-point the rest of the way.

MEN: OKWU 71, Friends 70

Talk about your thrillers. This one went down to the final buzzer.

The game was tied, 67-67, when Izuagbe made a dunk to put OKWU ahead, 69-67, with about a minute left.

Friends scrapped into the lead, 70-69, on a layup with 22 ticks showing. With 17 seconds remaining, Izuagbe put two free throws to bed to lift OKWU back into the lead, 71-70. Friends didn’t have an answer.

Izuagbe finished with 25 points to give him almost 80 points on the week.

Williams and McKenzie both sank 15 points to round out the top three scorers against Friends. Blake Hamblin added four points as the team’s next-highest scorer.

OKWU (6-10, 1-9) — which is coached by Heidi Messer — outplayed Friends in the first half, 34-29, but Friends fricasseed the nets for 40 points in the second half to escape Bartlesville with the win.

Gracie Alexander skinned the nets for 24 points to OKWU, including hitting 9-of-13 field goals along with 4-of-4 three-pointers.

But the remainder of the team shot only 13-of-43 overall and 1-of-12 from beyond the arc.

Khassidy Warr checked in with eight points for the Lady Eagles, followed by Sophia Regalado with seven and Khamille Warr with six.
