BARTLESVILLE AREA SPORTS REPORT

The Oklahoma Wesleyan University men's basketball bench will undoubtedly feel an absence this season with the recent passing of assistant coach Thomas Poling. However, while his body won't be on the court, his spirit will forever remain a part of the close-knit Christian university.

Poling passed away Aug. 19 at the age of 67. A celebration of life was held Aug. 23 in the Chapel at OKWU.

The 2024-2025 men's basketball team reached the Elite Eight at the NAIA National Championship Tournament, and Poling was a big part of the historic run, according to head coach Donnie Bostwick.

"He played a key role in our success the past five years," said Bostwick. "His encouragement, ability to instill confidence, and motivate players was unmatched."

Bostwick first met Poling in 2018 while recruiting Poling's son, Austin, and the two men became quick friends.

"Thomas' basketball IQ was off the charts," said Bostwick. "He had an incredible combination of people skills, uncommon work ethic and a passion for the game."

Prior to joining the OKWU staff, Poling coached the New Bedford High School (Mass.) basketball team to two state championships in 1993 and 1994. Poling joined the OKWU staff in 2020 and was involved in basketball camps and tutored local youth. He was fondly known for his catchphrase "beautiful," which he'd offer in response to nearly every conversation.

"He'll be greatly missed," said Bostwick. "We are all better people because of having Coach P in our lives."

Poling is survived by his children: Ashley Cook and her husband, Thomas; Angela Hawkins and her husband, Hayden; and Austin Poling and his wife, Mallory; and his three grandchildren: Samuel Cook, Hudson Hawkins and Abigail Hawkins.
