BARTLESVILLE AREA SPORTS REPORT
The following is a report of area softball teams:
DEWEY
Mother-nature’s soaking of Dewey’s home season opener against Skiatook in the third inning on Aug. 11 hasn’t slowed down the Lady Bulldoggers.
Since then, Class 3A Dewey is on a 7-3 tear, including two wins over 6A teams in the Broken Arrow Tournament on August 15-16.
Better yet, Dewey won their first two district contests over Sequoyah Claremore, 13-1 and 10-0 on Aug. 18-19.
“I’m pleased to start off the year 2-0 in district play,” said first year head coach Riley Allen, who doubles as the Bulldoggers baseball coach. However, he hopes for some improvement. “I think we have played good softball out of the gate but definitely can play better.”
“Our defense has been solid so far, but our pitching has been outstanding,” said Allen.
Prior to the weekend, pitcher Kayla Overton had pitched 36 innings, striking out 46 batters while walking seven and posting a 1.17 ERA
Allen added that Overton is also one of Dewey’s top hitters.
“Londyn Bond has been our hottest hitter to start the year, but the rest of our lineup is also doing a great job.”
Dewey split this weekend at the Rogers State University Festival, falling to Oologah-Talala 1-3 and defeating Verdigris 5-1.
Allen took over for longtime coach Niki Keck, who took a head coaching position at Crowder College. Keck led the Lady Roughriders to a record-setting season, finishing with a 54-11 overall record and advancing to the NJCAA National Tournament. Keck was also a Lady Bulldogger softball player.
Next up, the Lady Bulldoggers have consecutive games against Commerce Monday and Tuesday - first on the road and then at home. The Dewey Festival begins Thursday.

CANEY VALLEY
Caney Valley (6-3) streaked out of the gate with four wins in a row before falling to Pawhuska 2-11 in the Nowata Invitational earlier this month. Since then, the Class 2A Lady Trojans have lost only two games. Their latest win was over Rejoice Christian 9-1 last Friday.
One of the best moments of the season was 5-foot-2 sophomore pitcher Anderly Edwards’ perfect game against Catoosa at the Nowata Invitational. Caney Valley won 8-0 and made it to the championship game. Edwards faced 12 batters, striking out six and walking one.
"Anderly is a phenomenal pitcher when it comes to command of the zone," said head Coach Andy Fox said. "Defense and timely hitting were also excellent in that game." However, mistakes plagued the Lady Trojans, and they fell to Pawhuska in the championship game 2-11.
"Pawhuska is a good team and will make you pay if you make mistakes," Fox said. "We made too many defensive mistakes and couldn’t recover. So, we learn, stay positive, and keep working to improve as a team."
Caney Valley opened districts on Aug. 18 with an 8-2 win over Mounds, followed by a 2-12 loss to Oktaha. Next up, the Lady Trojans head to Shawnee on Monday and Nowata on Tuesday. They’ll also be in the Dewey Festival.
The Lady Trojans roster includes Anderly Edwards, Kalynn Edwards, Riley Brooks, McKenzie McCabe, Addison Daniels, Brooklyn McCabe, Faith Davis, Mia Malone, Roxy Hawkins, Adesta Henry, Rylee Files, Kiara Sanders and Aliay Harvey

PAWHUSKA
The Pawhuska Lady Huskies (7-5) opened districts with two wins on Aug. 18-19, defeating Chelsea 18-2 and Nowata 10-1.
This was Pawhuska’s second trip to Nowata, winning the Nowata Invitational 11-2 over Caney Valley earlier this month.
Sophomore Emillie Curry hit for a cycle and drove in six RBI in the Aug. 16 Nowata Invitational championship game against Caney Valley. Her final hit was a walk-off home run that ended the game. Senior pitcher Faylee Ferguson went five innings, allowing only four hits, two runs while striking out five. Brooklyn Miles and Preslee Long also had a pair of hits. The Lady Huskies had only two errors the entire tournament.
"They are an amazing talented group of girls who work together and play behind each other," said head coach Stephanie Jensen. "They are aggressive on the bases and at the plate."
Last Friday, the Lady Huskies split at the Kellyville Tournament, defeating Glenpool 5-2, while falling to Hominy 1-7. On Saturday, they lost to Tecumseh 1-10.
The Lady Huskies roster includes Curry, Long, Miles, Ferguson Jaycee Bohard, Briana Hogue, Sidney Big Eagle, Mylee Jenson, Katie Drummond, Brynlee Rumsey, Amayclyn Bohard, Savanna Hendren, and Madison Reynolds.
Next up, Pawhuska hosts Blackwell on Monday and travels to Hominy on Tuesday.
_____
NOWATA
The Lady Ironmen are 2-6 on the season. They had a big 13-4 win over Nowata County rival Oklahoma Union last Friday. The young Nowata team is led by first year coach Derick Ott.
Next up, the Lady Ironmen travel to Chelsea on Monday for a district matchup.

The Lady Cougars (4-7) split their district openers, losing to Wyandotte 2-19 but picking up the 17-13 win over Quapaw. Last Saturday, they defeated Afton 15-7.
Next up, the Lady Cougars travel to Ketchum on Tuesday. They are coached by Ashlyn Kile.
