BARTLESVILLE AREA SPORTS REPORT

Area volleyball teams have been building up plenty of momentum.

Following are reports from recent action:

DEWEY VS. WESLEYAN CHRISTIAN

Two Class 3A area rivals collided Monday at Dewey with the bombastic force of determination and intensity.

Dewey yanked out the win, 25-16, 21-25, 25-20, 22-25, 15-8.

The red-hot Lady Doggers improved to a transcendent 12-1 record — earning them the No. 8 ranking in the state this week.

In Monday’s win, “my two freshmen really pulled their weight,” said Dewey head coach Hayley Harris, referring to Rylan White and Marcela Willard.

“Those two did not drop a beat when it came to crunch time,” Harris explained.

Lacey Nichols added solid hitting and libero Isabela Villanueva “was everywhere,” Harris said.

She also singled out Callie Posch, C.J. Jones and Nevaeh Straley for their prolific performances.

Posch contributed eight blocks, Jones excelled at multiple spots on the court, including delivering several aces.

Straley made some strong shots on the right side, Harris added.

Dewey was coming off a perfect showing at last weekend’s Salina tourney.

Dewey trailed in the final set of the championship match, 11-14, before Callie went back to the serving stripe and put in a motion a 5-0 run to end the match.

Willard made the final kill to win it, set up by a block by Jones’.

As expected, the Lady Dogger veterans are rising to the challenge, which makes the emergence of the freshmen a key to success, Harris said, adding that Willard and White “have grit.”

Wesleyan Christian School also displayed plenty of grit on Monday while going up against the No. 8 team in the state.

“Miranda Hadrava played really smart,” said WCS head coach Mariah Cooks.

Whether she lined up in the middle or on the outside “she pretty much did her job,” Cooks said. “She helped her teammates by keeping the energy going and did a good job of seeing the court.”

Emily Christensen and Savvy Ganzkow also boosted the team’s performance, as did Ava Gatrell, a senior that stepped up as a hitter in place of another player and delivered.

Gatrell “did a good job of blocking Dewey,” Cooks said. “They have some phenomenal power. … I think we intimidated their hitting a little.”

Cooks also praised her team’s energy compared to a challenging outing last weekend in the Oologah tourney.

BARTLESVILLE

Wow!

The Lady Bruins plowed through the Regent Prep Tournament like a harrow through soft soil.

When it was all done, Bartlesville had harvested the tourney championship with a 6-0 record.

Highlights included a revenge win against Sand Springs, 2-1 (25-10, 21-25, 16-14), a sweep of Ponca City, 2-0 (25-23, 25-19) and a thriller against Rejoice Christian, 2-1 (25-21, 22-25, 15-10).

Bartlesville improved to 10-5, including seven-straight wins and an 8-1 record in its last nine matches.

The tournament “wasn’t the toughest competition, but we played well and took care of business,” said Lady Bruin head coach Andrew Blain. “Our girls were really fired up against Sand Springs and that set the tone for the rest of the weekend.”

Mia Johnson spearheaded the power attack by leading Bartlesville in kills.

“She played really well,” Blain said. “Not just swinging hard but making smart plays.”

Sophie Frye and Emma Parsley solidified the defense.

Blain also pointed to the performances of Ava Smith, Rylann O’Bannion along with middle blockers Cera Federico and Aisley Keirsey.

“Aisley is just a freshman … but she’s catching up to the speed of the game. She had a big week,” Blain said.

Next up, Bartlesville travels Thursday to Ponca City and will be off for a week.

After starting off the season at 3-5, the Lady Bruins have caught fire.

“Our win against Tulsa Union really galvanized us and we followed up by going undefeated on the weekend,” Blain explained. “It’s something to jump forward off of.”
